Retrieving.

Post by Anarchy84 »

Hi everyone. Could use some advice on retrieving please.

Jed will do memory retrieves and blind retrieves in the house but outside he's not interested.

At home he will sit and wait while I drop a dummy and walk back to him. He then retrieves it to my hand on command. He will also retrieve a dummy I have hidden while he is in the other room.

Outside is a different story. He retrieves the first one and throws it at my feet then runs off to scramble in the bushes. I call him back and try again but he does the same. Yesterday he got fed up and ran off to hide his dummy. I still haven't found it. Today he threw his ball in the river and I had to wade in and retrieve it myself.

HELP!

Must be pretty special if he can throw a ball?

Try a long line so's he can't b' off, you said he was a fast learner so it shouldn't take long to teach him you want him to retrieve to you not throw it for you.

Haha. I might just do that if all else fails.

I think I know a place that might be suitable. I'll take him that way tonight and see how he goes.

Thanks.

Just the sort of dog everyone wants to use as a stud dog. Seriously though concentrate on retrieving in the room, use the same words and encouragement all the time. Once this becomes automatic then move to the garden and once this is embedded move to doing it in his regular exercising place.
Go to that training group you went to of redrobs. Training groups are well worth going to,there is so much to be gained from them.

Whoa there with the unteaching! Methinks this has promising international possibilities for advancing a breed...

Usually the British dogs have to be tutored in the art of "catching"

but if you've got a natural thrower, that's a valuable asset in international Labrador development.

A Pub car park would be suitable as the dog will be on lead. If all else fails export him to the States, a dog that throws would be welcome over there from all accounts...
