pet gundog question
pet gundog question
Is it feasible to expect my cocker to be steady with a dummy but to allow free play and to run in for a tennis ball or Frisbee. I want to train steadiness to the throw but equally as she loves to retrieve her ball and would do all day I want her to have fun as well. Am I asking too much can this be done and if so how to go about it such as free play then training / steadiness or tuther way about ?
If its not possible to achieve should I just be content with trying to achieve a good delivery at least and not worry about the running in ?
Cheers - ian

Yes it is possible to do this. Just shout "Wheeeeee!" as you toss a tennis ball or Frisbee and keep quiet when you toss dummies.

Re: pet gundog question
I have a cue word ("yeeha") which I use to allow my dog to run in/not remain steady to a thrown object.
Running in is huge fun, and there are times I just want to go out and enjoy time with my dog. I also have a special squeaky rubber oval ball which he loves.
To keep him switched on, sometimes I use the you are allowed to run in word and sometimes I don't. I always expect a proper retrieve to hand, no mucking about.

Yes. I forgot to mention I never do it with a dummy but with tennis balls, squeaky or even my hat. But I will also expect steadiness to these thrown objects in the absence of yeeha.trekmoor wrote:Yes it is possible to do this. Thank you, so it is possible then.AlandJake wrote:I have a cue word ("yeeha") which I use to allow my dog to run in/not remain steady to a thrown object.

Any tips on the best way to teach steadiness ?
She will retrieve no problem in fact she is very keen. The delivery to hand is coming on well but not got a sat delivery yet. Phew its fun but confusing stuff for a novice. Yes I know i should prob see a trainer but I like to try things on my own first.
Many thanks to everyone for there patience with a novice and his prob daft questions.

For this reason S.P. ..... I think ?ips wrote: I want to train steadiness to the throw but equally as she loves to retrieve her ball and would do all day I want her to have fun as well.
If I have a pup that is totally steady on land and that pup has yet to swim I find it useful to let or encourage the pup to run-in for a while when doing water retrieves.
