Ditch the cotton T shirt. It will just hold on to any perspiration and be cold and clammy as soon as you stop generating heat and humidity.
Having said that, there were some unseasonably mild days last winter.
Hope you have a great season's beating

Re: Base layer
.... and ditch the cotton/poly shirt. Go to a site like GoOutdoors (there are loads of similar discount sites on the web) & get some Tech T shirts & a selection of different weight fleeces & you'll be prepared for anything. Just layer them as necessary & be prepared to take one off or add one as needed. But as A&J says, breathable outers struggle to cope when you are hot & sweaty, through exertion or weather, so it's often better to wear a fleece if it's not too wet, or get a waterproof fleece. I think it's easy to get kitted up to the eyeballs with all the gear to cope with any weather imaginable when in reality you're often better travelling lightweight, especially if you're involved in any physical activity like beating.

Re: Base layer
Cotton T shirts are ok for summer worn alone but aint the best for a base layer on a days beating. Activity sports people like lycra and other sythetics but although these transport moisture well by god they stink after use- So best not take the top layer off at lunch! Besides there is something just plain wrong in middle age blokes wearing lycra and such...
Personally I am a big fan of a std sweat top as worn by so many sportsmen on light training and workmen as corporate wear (besides I get the vat back and get some free advertising LOL). Over that you cant beat wool millions of sheep cannot be wrong and if you see what breeds like the herdwick and swaledale survive up here on the Northern fells. Breathable and actually keeps you warmer when damp " talk about technical layer or what!" For me that's a wooly pullover or a swani shirt. Better top layers? look at what our military wear though combats aint exeptable on formal shoots the idea is widely copied.
