Re: List of kennels breeding working/health tested cockers

Post by JET1955 »

I ve looked on the cocker database at a few well known sires and their prodigy and there seems to be very few tested for ams. Also very few for hips, and the ones that are scored, on average are not well below the average score for the breed,as recommended by the kennel club, when considering sire and dam.
Makes you wonder whether the health of the breed comes into consideration at all.
Because the majority of breeders ,and owners of stud dogs,in the not too distant past haven't done even minimum health tests ,their is a lack of available information out there.
Nothing will alter my view that in some cases the next field trial winner and and the kudos for breeding it ,is more important than the health of these brilliant little dogs.

Acral Mutilation Syndrome

Glasgow Vet School and the Cocker Spaniel Breed health Coordinator have obtained the following figures from Antagene who say that there have been 72 tested of which 5 are carriers and 1 affected. In fact that should read 73 and 5 carriers as the affected pup and his aunt (clear) were both tested as Springers. Add to this the fact that as he was affected then both his sire and dam were carriers and two litter sisters were also affected plus the original untested pup by the same sire means that there is another known carrier bitch totalling 8 known carriers and 4 known affected pups.
AMS “is a rare autosomal recessive genetic sensory neuropathy that results in mutilation of distal extremities” which affects about 50% of the offspring of carriers. Those of us who have bought or bred affected pups have had absolutely no idea of the condition and it is not something you would wish on your worst enemy. This is not to say that anyone is to blame (unless they knew about it and kept quiet). It is therefore important that everyone wishing to breed from their dogs should now test for AMS to avoid spreading this dreadful condition any further.

I have a PRA, FN & AMS clear FTW cocker dog and I'll consider testing any future breeding bitches for AMS since it's increasing prevalence.

Is there a list or point of reference that gives the names of tested dogs and results? So far I've spent hours looking and found nothing conclusive.
It seems like a big dark cloud has been cast over many of today's top dogs. Wouldn't it be better to highlight those in question so people can do the research rather than tar all with the same brush.

Think this is what the OP is trying to create here? I haven't seen anthing anywhere else but I haven't spent hours searching.
Whaupley Gundogs are starting to fully health test their stud dogs.

Beechessam: There is a KC webpage of DNA tests and results for tested dogs. However, with PRA and FN being the only DNA tests that the KC currently record, those are the only ones they publicise on the page, so no AMS which is a bit annoying:

http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health/ ... screening/ (this link might not work for some unless you can copy and paste the whole URL, some brightspark at the KC has used parenthesises in the file name so it gets broken up when the forum software shortens it)

(You can also find the other breed results listed in alphabetic order too: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health/ ... d-results/)

Perhaps this will be useful for some :)

As I see it the OP has started to list health tested breeding kennels.

There is no list of affected or carriers.

The KC do not record/publish the results and no one seems to want to name any known carriers or affected dogs.

Not much help to anyone wanting to avoid breeding carriers.

Did you look at the results on the link above? There are lists of clear, carrier and affected cockers there, published by the KC.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what it is you are hoping to get a list of. Probably all the booze I drank last night.

True, I agree, but if we start a list of tested dogs then maybe it will give us all a start point for researching different lines, perhaps better than nothing? Personally I think the more results both good and bad, are published the better for all breeds. I wish we all had the bottle to name carriers and affected dogs without fear of recriminations.

I can't get the link to show properly either, sorry.
