Advice needed please
Re: Advice needed please
I'm agreeing with you, Judy - controlled free running.
Re: Advice needed please
WHAT? With three or four Cockers?? Mission impossible.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Re: Advice needed please
My two year old I allow to free hunt and always have as I know I gave a level of control and can bring him in to a reasonable pattern when I want to , my one year old I don't , having only had him for a couple of months ,and he needs to learn the close hunting before the Wild bugger can be trusted
Does that help

Does that help
Re: Advice needed please
Yes, all those replies help thank you.
I'm really fed up now as I've just sat here for over an hour and typed out a great long post and lost it again, seems to be because the website is timing out and logging me off while I'm still writing. Do you all type your posts into a word document first and then copy and paste it in a reply box? Wullie, I'm looking at you here

Right, well at least I've worked out what's happening to my posts. I'm too tired now to retype my diatribe tonight so I'll attempt to remember everything I wrote and duplicate it tomorrow, it seems the weather is going to be fairly rubbish so I'll spend most of the day indoors other than exercising the canines and going to buy some paint so I can make a start on the decorating next week-sigh!

Not that I'm long winded, like some on here,
but I found it was a good idea to periodically preview what one has wrote, unfinished or not. Seems the 'system' has to be informed you are still there and not gone hunting.
ps. I see Wullie has got you answered.

I have had the problem of the computer "timing me out" but I screamed loud and long for my son who drove over to sort out that problem. It's a good job he did coz I am a one fingered typist and my wife, the greatly revered Soup Dragon, finds the way my tongue sticks out as I concentrate on pushing down on the keyboard in the correct places absolutely hilarious.

Wullie,
I would never imply you "blether", all your posts are fun, informative and a joy to read.
Just that I know you have a lot of "experience" in writing longer posts so bowed to your greater knowledge! Lol

Re: Advice needed please
Being a complete and utter novice in the Gundog world - i can offer you no real worthy advice !!! I have a working cocker who will be 2 in August and I have always allowed her to " free run " ... i am a bit like Wullie in that i don't see the point in having a dog if you keep it on a lead 99% of the time, i want to see her running round with her ears flapping in the wind
Maddie seems to be a bit like Wullies dog in that she likes to roam far combing the undergrowth, she is also very hunt orientated, retrieving is hit and miss - the only thing she does retrieve is the remote control/tea towel/oven gloves when she has stolen them from their respective sides, and also the washing after she has stuck her head in the washing machine and taken the socks / underwear she wanted... I am lucky in that the woods near me have rabbits ( her favourite thing it seems ! ) and also deer which i found out to my horror after she scented one and then subsequently chased it through the woods and across a field ignoring my whistle !
I think for me i have given up on the idea of being able to actually work her ( you don't see many pairs of socks flying around in Berkshire ! ) but i like the working side and watching her work ( i use the term loosely as i bumble along with her "training" ) but i enjoy it, and i hope she does. But i couldn't keep her on a lead - if i wanted that i would have brought a handbag dog......
