That did make me laugh!!
I train mine when I'm in the mood, when time allows and how good I think they'll turn out and when I think I'm going to sell it!!
I need a fairly robust type of spaniel, not one that needs physical punishment, I'm not one for that, but one that can be taken out, other than for morning and evening walk, when work allows, something that doesn't need constant coochy cooing, something that remembers the last lesson even if it's been a week or so since I taught it, during the Shooting season, cubbing, spring and summer trapping, butt building, pen building and mending, heather burning, softies generally don't do well in these circumstances, no fault on either side.

Sounds like my kind of dog too. Probably something most of us are looking for in fact!
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

All depends on the dog! I've had some that thrive on the more the better and some that dry up the more you do.

I agree. Reading the dog, will give feedback on whether or not something is fun, boring, confusing, or punishing. The hard part is figuring out which it is ? But I guess, that is the art of it all, and so, most of us will have to figure it out by elimination.

I suppose too, having a high drive dog helps when following a program where consistent work is required in order to meet standards at tests or trials in a timely fashion. However, preparing a dog for hunting can be more relaxing and casual, with the dog, more-or-less setting the pace.

Every day but not always dummy/retrieving work. Less is more.

Train almost every day, both dogs, one of 2 1/2 years and a 10 month old......I make sure we have fun too, I have a dummy mine ball theirs so they get rewarded with the ball, and thats their fun part at the end of a short session.. I do around 15 mins i a field nearby, but the walk down is training too. so in total they have 40 mins approx. Both of min just want to do more and more each day, so I guess I have a good balance of enjoyable training and fun....Sue
