You might be in luck

Seems we have a wee colony of bunnies moved into the wee triangle field and adjoining wood here - probably due to new electrical cabling work further up the hill.

The fences around the wood and field are at present being replaced so once they're done we'll be good to go

Oh and we have partridge in the back garden !!

It's a good job my dogs are so well trained to catch bunnies and birds coz I can't shoot them for love nor money .

I have again had to abandon my dog training plans for today , it's raining quite heavily here at times but that would not have stopped me. What did stop me was The Soup Dragon's plans for our back garden. I ended up going shopping for three 60 litre bags of compost and about 14 new plants. My car, the muck truck, was used to carry all this stuff and almost as soon as we got home that wummin bogged off back out shopping again !

I got fed up sitting around so I carried the 3 bags of soil around the houses to my back garden .... and completely knackered myself in the process. That got me a bit of a glare from The Soup Dragon when she returned to find me sprawled out in a chair and gasping for air. The job of transporting the 180 litres of soil would have been made easier by using my wheelbarrow but the result of my wife's first spawning had borrowed it .......and kept it. Anyway the job is done now.

Tomorrow is another day and I have now found the stuff belonging to the e-collar but cannot find the dummy collar. If I can I'll take Edge out wearing the e-collar but I won't take the transmitter with me in case I am tempted !

Charlie I will phone you. Hope your phone is working for a change !

Livvy Pond - 5.45 a.m. - Raining, strong winds.

Dogs - Edge and Libby.

I was too sore to sleep so I went rabbit hunting early if not very bright. I was dozy enough however to forget to take a whistle with me so the dogs had a very good time. The rain was heavy at times and only my stubbornness made me keep walking.

For the first time Edge was wearing the e-collar. He isn't all that dim after all because he didn't like the look of it and bogged-off as soon as I tried to put it on him. It wasn't switched on and I didn't take the transmitter with me, I just wanted to get him used to doing things right and doing things wrong as he wore it in order for him not to realise that a collar can correct him.

He adjusted himself to wearing it within seconds and took off after Libby who had been in kennels for about 6 weeks and who was all for hitting the horizons again. Eventually me and the dogs came to a sort of compromise........... Edge wasn't to go more than 50 yards from me and Libby wasn't to go more than 500 !

I was walking through woodlands crisscrossed with dirt tracks and a few 6 feet wide gravelled paths. Edge came back into view quite regularly as he hunted the thick woods off to either side of me but he was covering enough ground for any two or even three beaters dogs ! Libby did her usual, she was hardly ever seen except for when she either whizzed across a path 70 -100 yards up ahead of me or, if the pathways forked and split , I'd see her stand still for a moment well ahead of me until she knew which path I was taking and then she resumed her hunting.

When I first got her I was very worried that she would be a "bog-off" dog , many brittanies are. I spent a lot of time and effort out in the woods with her doing what I call "anxiety training." I deliberately "lost" her and she had to find me as I dodged off down side paths or hid behind trees etc. She quickly became a very hard bitch to lose even though her confidence levels in herself are sky high and she hunts/runs a very long way out from me a great deal of the time.
She sort of checks-in from time to time to make sure of my position and then continues hunting.

I suspect she was clearing any rabbits around a long way ahead of both me and Edge as I only saw one rabbit for about an hour and 15 minutes worth of walking about in the rain ! Edge saw no rabbits at all but he did enjoy his walk.

Yesterday evening I took Edge out again and it's a good job I hadn't switched the collar on ! He would not stop to voice or to whistle if he happened to be running-in at the time ......and he ran-in twice ! When I did manage to stop whistle him during retrieves he was as likely to go left as to go right if I pointed to the right. I felt my temper rising and my ticker getting a bit erratic so I stopped at that.

On the way back to my car I gave him a short ,15-20 yards, marked retrieve with a tennis ball right into the middle of some very heavy woodland cover, broken branches, a fallen tree, ferns, brambles, creeping ivy ......the lot and didn't think I'd ever see that ball again. He found it very easily and almost at once. The bugger can hunt !

It has rained or poured rain all day here today and I haven't even been over the doorstep. I am becoming a fair weather dog trainer.

P.S. Charlie , don't you ever answer either of your phones you Wurzel Gummidge look alike ???

I don't mean to make this about e-c and sorry I am late, but
1. I didn't explain it well (said I was tired of typing :) ), the idea with 'overlaying' the e-c over the known command is to teach the dog that it can turn off the pressure (the e-c) by complying and it knows the cue already, so it's easy to comply. In case of 'here' or 'come' checkcord helps to guide the dog if it gets 'stuck', electricity is so alien to dogs, sometimes the response is to freeze (even on low stim). The idea is that the stim turns OFF the moment dogs starts to come to you, timing is crucial, more than ever.
2. Bill, I'd check the collar (it being old) on my forearm, it must be barely perceptible tickle on the low setting.
3. I wasn't trying to affect direct/indirect pressure, that's over my head and it's the American lab thing (more or less).
4 Here's half decent video, I see they changed the way they intro the collar now, basically using 'nick' e-c simultaneously with leash tug.

Here's more of what I was talking about

Thanks, I can see that I will have to rethink this. My collar does have varying stim levels but it does not and will not give a continuous stim. It switches off automatically no matter for how long a finger pushes the button. The dog could not therefor learn to stop the stim by complying with a command because the collar would have already switched itself off.
I rather liked that idea when I bought the collar because it meant that a dog could not be continuously stimmed/shocked no matter how annoyed a trainer might be by a dogs behaviour. The stim on my collar lasts only for an instant of time.

Just tried out my collar on myself.........it has stopped working . Back to the drawing board !
