Pup ate raccoon feces

Post by PeacockBlue »

I found my pup (labrador retriever) eating the feces of an unknown animal. I had a look at what was left and I think it might be raccoon feces. We had raccoon in our yard couple of years back but then they disappeared. I have a doubt if they have come back. I have already called a raccoon removal service to check because it's a pretty populated neighborhood with pets and small kids and a raccoon will be a threat to all of us. I want to know if I should give any medication to the pup. I have heard that raccoon feces carry roundworms, but does it affect dogs? Should I take him to a vet? Advice please...

Give it some macaroni cheese to get rid of the taste.

You need to google Baylisascariasis, and yes I would go see your vet.
As an aside, I see treatment had the option of Ivermectin, I know that stuff works as I accidentally injected myself once, gave me a splitting headache for 24hrs, but never got bitten by a horsefly for the rest of the year :)

I took him to a vet and thank god there is nothing to worry. Also a team from an animal removal came and caught few raccoons from our area. Hopefully they are gone for good and I won't have to deal with those again.

Train your dog to stop eating poop, simple solution, my guess is raccoons are like rats, remove some and others come to fill the void created. Saves having to bring in pest control regularly.

Raccoon feces contains a specific type of roundworm called Baylisascaris. I would advise you to take your puppy to the nearest vet and have your puppy thoroughly examined as it can be pretty dangerous. Keep your yard raccoon free at all times especially if you have pets at home. I had a similar experience and had to call in a Company to get rid of the raccoons. Install an electric fence around your perimeter and also add an extra electric fence wire underneath for safety measures. You could even trap them in cages by baiting them with marshmallow or cat food. Using homemade raccoon repellents is a natural non expensive way to get rid of raccoons.
