Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
No, but for wildfowling I've always liked the look of them. I've heard they are very much a one person dog.

Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
google Penrose Chesapeakes, I think she's the only person to have had trial awards with them who's still involved in the breed.
cheers,
Alice.

Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
Never had one, but they have always fascinated me because of their reputed ruggedness. Also, I've read, that they blow their coat twice a year, rather than everyday like a lab.
Some day, I may get one.
Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
Only met two, one at retriever Club training, sang loudly, the other belonged to a chap in the village he struggled with his for a few years before giving it away and buying another Lab!

Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
I was looking at these for a long time and i realy like the look of them not because of the videos they are the time u put into them in relation to training ect..but the pure stature of them they are so powerful. How would their drive messure up to the lab for instance and what would the flaws be in a thick fleecey coat like that in the summer mnts or on a days picking up being as big as they are would they tyre faster then a lab or are they just purely for wildfowling. how would they messure up in our climate where that coat is not essential.their dosent seem to be many breeders of them this side of the pond are they tried and tested.their is a kennel in england that claims they have 9 ftc out 13 dogs in the uk competing against labs in mix breed trials penrosecheasapeakes that is alot of ratio giveing the population of the breed in the uk to date are we over looking something here
Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
I stand correct 5 dogs have been placed in trials
Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
Re the "untrainable" one above, the guy has had several well behaved Labradors since I've known him, it may be that the Chessie was just not the right temperament for him but I gained the impression it was somewhat thick and obstreperous!
I often think a Trial award means the dog is well trained and has had a bit of luck on the day, a consistent winner of Trials means a good dog as well as a good trainer but that's justly personal opinion you understand! Also, did they compete against Labs or were they in Minor Breed Trials?
Not that I'm trying to put you off or anything!

Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
My experience of the breed is limited. I used to fancy one but the very first one I met was very lacking in retrieve "drive" and he wouldn't even walk through a puddle never mind swim.

Re: Cheasapeake bay retriever
Re. Penrose, what they're saying is that of the 13 champion dogs (i.e. show champions that have done the little working qualification to allow them to drop the 'SCh' bit) in the breed, she bred 9 of them. In a numerically small breed like Chessies, everyone has to do everything, so the show folk work (to some extent) and the work folk show (to some extent) - there isn't a divide.Cooper wrote:I was looking at these for a long time and i realy like the look of them not because of the videos they are the time u put into them in relation to training ect..but the pure stature of them they are so powerful.
