Ok still doing my homework, but I have a question for you all. If you use the coefficient calculator (I know some of you think this is bollocks just humour me) and you put in your chosen stud against your bitch and get a 9.1 why is it that when you then look at the pedigrees you can see duplicate dogs in the breeding, yet you can look at studs that look great on paper with no duplicates and the % comes out higher? What is that all about?

Oddly enough a question I found myself asking last week, the logical answer was it take further generations back into account, the less logical answer you answered in brackets :-D

It is a useful tool provided people know its strengths and its limitations - maybe the KC need a reminder

Agreed (think I have a lot to learn)struggling to find what I want on our local shoots. I thought if I could find what I liked on paper then we have the whole shooting season to perhaps see the dog work and see if it would compliment our bitch. I didn't want to breed for the sake of it. Will carry on looking.

Amen, I think it was DR who pointed out that if you are looking at the pedigrees and know what you are seeing you will have a pretty good idea if you are too close or not. It is only a statistic and gives no indication of any health issues that there might be. I play with it when I have nothing better to do and what surprises me is how little difference to the COI a mating where there are a number of shared ancestors and ones with seemingly none in the last 5 generations makes which makes me ponder how you could get a COI of 5 or below for a springer.

Looking around me I think a good eye is lacking these days, that "if it looks right it is right" idea. I remember ronde overhearing a conversation at a Trial which was along the lines of "can I use your lad next Spring, he's got a good strong back end and my bitch hasn't" I remember thinking ' but why would you want to introduce that front end to your line?'
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
