The boldest hardest bitch I have ever had came from a complete wuss of a bitch put to a gentle, sensible sire. You can't tell until the genes are mixed and out there, what you can do is pick the boldest, most confident pup from the litter and hope it stays that way.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Thanks everyone, and for the PMs too. I'll speak with Will C and Andy R. I'm trying to give myself the best chance of a good old fashioned hard headed type of pup and I think Judy is right, I'll pick the one that shows those qualities as a pup and hope it retains those traits. I'm a complete novice at breeding but can't wait!
Here's a picture of Daphne - she's a very good natured dog and a great worker but just lacks confidence when there's other dogs about, she was attacked by a couple of dogs including a pitbull while she was a pup and I think that is what has knocked her confidence, I shoot over regularly on a one to one basis and she never puts a paw wrong.

Too bad you weren't over here. My dog is extremely hard going and headstrong. There is nothing that makes him back down

It does beg the (rhetorical) question, if you want a head strong pup then why breed from a soft bitch. :-D

Spitting image of my bitch. She is also a bit soft I wonder if they are related. ??
Muddling along in the hope that one day it starts to make sense.
