In a niche market, there is only a limited number of sales, by reducing the number of sales even further, buying second hand, your reducing the viability even further...something to  about.
the simon tyres box set is an eye watering £100 not everybody can afford it so buying secondhand may be their only option !

If its of value to your dogs future by helping you train them better, then you can save up. Given the price of keeping a dog now a days, £100 is really not a lot, considering you are getting probably a life time of experience at your fingertip. ( Often peer reviewed and assured quality ) Personally I would rather spend that money on a form of useful reference, or better still in a `one to one', than hand it to the `insurance industry' for a few months `peace of mind' emotional blackmail
However, I'm old school, and still value principles instead of £££'s so look at the cost of things slightly differently. Yes I'm always on the look out for a bargain, where would Ebay be without me  , but I tend to only buy stuff there like this, if it was more a curiosity than a `want'.
There is of course the future price to consider of DVDs of this nature, as I alluded to in my previous post. Those buying second hand are only pushing the price higher of these, as unit price will be based on market sales of the original previous sales. If you are therefore taking a long term view about making these forms of reference available to more of the `cash strapped' dog training enthusiasts, its probably not the best way to go about it
I remember when Rory Major brought out a box set for training the HPR, I think that was set about £100, and we gave him a lot of stick about that at the time. I said if he brought out an `out take' copy I would be up for it as it would be longer than the `serious' version and work out cheaper than Sky

I dont have your principles neither the cash to waste so would much rather buy secondhand, I think your talking bollox about it pushing the price up otherwise he would be out of business by now

on one thing we do agree the money is far better spent on one to one trainging but thats not the topic of conversation

100 squid! :o I know which option I'd choose. The moment somebody starts selling anything like this they are immediately creating a second hand market. And why not? The original purchaser has got full value from them and there's a limit to how long anyone needs to look at a training video - hands on is where the learning starts - so why not pass it on so others can benefit. Is it to be recommended that you chuck them in the bin when you get bored with them or in a cupboard gathering dust!? Not very sustainable.

All I can say is all future threads re dvds will be deleted as they seem to cause so much angst. We can't police the forum and any request such as the OP's can easily lead to the "secondhand" market in copies for which we get it in the neck from the producers, its just not worth the hassle. Sorry guys, I don't moderate for pleasure thats for sure.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

If this niche market is so vulnerable, then it could be argued that forums are giving out way too much free advice and as such must be the bane for professional trainers and DVD producers. In light of this, maybe the forum should only be used as a referral.

Let's face it, anyone with money will spend what it takes to have a brand new package delivered to their door and add it to all the other new and special things they have. :snooty: In contrast, those without will bypass the purchase and read uk gundog, and the really desperate will beg, borrow or steal. After all, how many of us download music, movies or worst still not buy local produce ? We are all shameful in selflessly maintaining the most in our purchasing power.

Ps. Judy, let me have the last say, before you censure.

Pss. I take it, there is no problem with the free commentary, links and the resultant advertising of dvds on gundog sites. I believe that is cutting into someones' pocket book ? :)

  Bollocks or basic understanding of market forces :?: The more he sells direct the lower the unit price as the costs are spread over more units  In a niche market, with a limited number of sales available the more that is bought as second hand the less customers are available from that niche market, and therefore the viability to produce the product becomes hard to justify the fixed cost
I am not saying buying second hand is wrong, and each to their own when it comes to principles, just don't kid yourself that your not effecting the future availability or price of this media.
I agree Naj, that `hands on is where the learning starts ', and I have not seen the need to purchase a dog training dvd, ever. ( Editing to make a perfect finished product, takes away a lot of the really need to know stuff ;) ) I am thinking its more a generation thing, as I'm sure thee and me and many others of a certain age have many a training book gathering dust ( and some value, them market forces again   ) on our shelves, which are the equivalent to todays dvd. If someone prefers, or thinks a dog training dvd is going to benefit them in this way, I'm not going to argue just because I have a different view of the world of dogs. All I am saying is that they should be prepared to support that media, just as we supported the authors and publishers in our day

I must have saved a fortune by gaining all my knowledge from forum members. Newf is bang on, pro trainers must hate you lot :) giving all that info for free.
I haven't bought any dvd but I did buy a couple of books, I didn't find any of them particularly enlightening though. Virtual one to one ....its the future :)
Muddling along in the hope that one day it starts to make sense.
