electric collar

Post by manx »

not good at searching so .........
what are peoples feelings on the use off them ?
my wifes cousins husband is using one on a puppy..... not a working dog..
I myself would never use them as I think they are cruel that a dog needs them , not at least a puppy
I wont say what the puppy is ........YET ! ...
in my eyes it is being a puppy........ even so I would not use one.....if I am not good enough to train the dog ..its not the dogs fault ?

I don't think it is something I would use on a pup. Someone capable, should be able to get a reasonably trained young dog from a big dose of play and a little bit of firmness. If this person has no experience with dogs, I would say it would be better to spend the collar money on a good training book and a visit to a reputable trainer.

Depends on a number of factors. None of which are expressed in the original post.
-Is the gentleman an experienced trainer.
-How old is the pup.
-How is he utilising the collar.
-What specifically is he trying to train for (with the collar)

I always thought e-collars could be quite useful especially for trainers as all you'd need to do would to stick them on the owners so you could give them a gentle reminder if they weren't paying any attention or their dog misbehaved. Would also be useful in chasing situations as they could get a zap there as well if they can't be asked to put their dogs on the lead

I'm with SP, need more specifics on this individual case.
I have one, never used it except on myself ( contender has a point  ) still in its box. I bought it because there was a lot of talk on banning them by the ill informed crowd. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not be able to get my hands on one. ( without putting a dirty mac on and delving into the window less internet shops of our cousins across the pond, and having it sent in plain covered packaging   )
They are not a `cruel' instrument in themselves, however improper use in an improper way on an inappropriate animal due to the ignorance of the trainer would render them ( the trainer ) to be acting in a cruel manner towards the dog.
I am more comfortable training pups in particular with tried and tested methods of building an understanding whilst being understanding, so see no need to use the EC on a dog still considered to be a pup myself.

A$$ I spent some time searching for that last night!
Its quite simple, if you aren't good enough to train a pup without you aren't good enough to train one with.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

I'd use one on a determined sheep chaser but not on a puppy.
