AMS Positive Carrier... Gutted

Post by Aimeetess »

Just had the test results back and my lovely red WCS is a carrier of AMS.

Hes only 19 weeks but wanted the test done as heard alot of bad news about AMS recently and pups being affected with it :(
Planned to have a litter in the future from him and use him as a stud to a friends bitch, who may of been interested.

Is that out the window for him now? :( Was going to get him fully PRA tested, health etc in case we planned to use him as a stud but if there isn't any point I won't bother as don't want to be passing this disease..

First of all, well done for doing the test but sorry the result is not what you wanted. As a Carrier he will not develop the distressing symptoms so don't worry on that score. I would ask that you look for his parents' health tests on MyKC.org.uk and that you notify the breeder as other pups in that litter may be Carriers or even Affected if the sire and dam have not been tested for AMS. MyKC will also show you whether the pup is Hereditary Clear for PRA and FN.

No, it is not out the window for him to be used as a stud when he is fully grown, provided he is otherwise a good example of the breed and has working ability, preferably proven ability in working tests. He should only, however, be used on a tested Clear bitch so no Affected pups will be produced. But bear in mind that the majority of working dogs are not bred from, so if he is not used, he just joins the rest of the dogs that are decent dogs but not of stud quality.
Dont let this put you off, enjoy your pup! I health test my ESS and I've done three AMS tests this year with a fourth one being done this month, so I know what it is like waiting for results.

The breeder is a old fashioned game keeper, I have just registered on myKC.org.uk but I dont think any of his parents had tested, his relatives may as alot are red FTCH lines. I have told the breeder and he's said hes very sorry, he hasn't heard of AMS.

I have looked and it shows only about 10 have been diagnosed as carriers, which puts him in a small minority! Surely there are tons out there but not tested? A lot of friends have well bred Cockers, parents not tested and either are their dogs. Glad he isn't infected but it is still a huge shame.

Hi, sorry to hear about your boys AMS result, is the breeder going to test the dam and has he informed the stud dog owner that he needs to do the same? There are thousands of untested dogs out there but there are also quite a few that have been tested as carriers but have never come forward with their results for some reason!

I have informed him, he doesn't even know what the disease is and didn't seem to care or want to tell any sibling owners or the studs owner. Im worried for the siblings owners as some could be affected and not just carriers. He really is a old fashioned shoot owner and don't think he 'believes in it all' which is a real shame. :brickwall:

I really think you need to post your dogs pedigree publicly maybe on some fb pages, if the breeder of your dog doesn't give a damn then it's up to you to try and save this happening again by making public.

Hi Aimeetess

Don't be gutted! Your dog has tested as carrier for a recessive gene. OK fine. You, your spouse/partner, your best friend, your dog and your neighbor are carriers of at least one (maybe many!) recessive genes. How many humans get tested before they marry / mate?

Have you read this paper from The Kennel Club Genetics Centre

http://cavalierhealth.org/images/aht_sh ... _nov11.pdf

Now that you know your dog is a carrier for a particular recessive gene, it does make sense to mate him only with clear bitches. That way, you can be certain that none of the offspring can be affected. Otherwise - enjoy your dog. He is healthy. Train him & work him as nature intended.

Do not be bullied or intimidated by paranoid others on here urging publishing pedigrees, neutering etc. They have their own agendas.

If you do end up using your boy, and I see no reason not to as long as his mate is AMS clear and all else is good, I would suggest that you speak with the bitches owner about endorsing the pups so the new owners can't breed (well they can't register offspring) until they test their pup and make sure they're not going to produce affected pups themselves. I hope that makes sense I'm a bit sleepy!

Thank you Bird - this is exactly what i'll do if I do ever mate him. I really don't want to neuter him and he has no interest in bitches at all yet (14 months) and I would like another related to him one day. There is one chap with a bitch locally who was interested in using him so I would happily pay for the AMS test on his bitch if he wanted to go for it.
