Recall

Post by Freya »

Can anyone give me some advice or tips for recall - it's by no means 100% with my WCS. Thank you.

Hi Freya
Have a look at a book called “Total recal” by pipa mattison.
Pipa gives a great easy to follow step by step guide for dogs if all age and experience. I’m a total novice and have used her technique on my lab and he comes bounding back full of enthusiasm ( hope i haven’t spoke to soon)
Hope this helps, well worth a read.

A recall is by no means 100 % certain with any cocker spaniel ! I agree though that Pippa Mattisons little book is a good one to follow.

A good way to start is to recall him to his breakfast and dinner, always make a recall rewarding.

Show me anyone who tells you their dog never disobeys the recall, and I'll show you a liar.

I have read that acid test is being able to call them away from their food but I’m jiggerd if I can do this with my lab yet...

Sisyphean task calling a Lab away from food!

I often find resorting to unladylike language improves the recall, not good when in company, especially not the vicar's wife...
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Funny, I have never had problems with calling any of my dogs off of food or to drop or leave a bone. However, they will give me the finger at times on game or even another dog. Shrewd buggers have the ability to estimate distance and cover as good situations to self reward and put off worrying about the dire consequences when I finally get to them. So no, food is not the acid test, all situations are. ;)
