Labrador 12 week old puppy overbite 9mm
Hi,
A couple of weeks ago I bought a Labrador puppy, to be trained as a working dog, both parents are registered. However when I took the puppy for his 2nd vaccination the vet noticed the puppy had a overbite of 9mm. Is this a lot?
It is really bothering me as I bought the puppy for £800 and worried he's going to have health issue and not going to be a good gun dog! Iv been told I should return him to the breeder and have a refund. The breeder has agreed to take him back and refund me £600 but I really don't want to do that, as I really like him and has a great temperament!
I have read a lot online and everything is very negative with dogs with overbites and seen horrible picture of puppy's mouths when they are older!
Has anyone got any advice, will the lower jaw grow? Will his adult teeth cause problems? Will he still be able to pick up?
Thanks,

I have no real informed advice just an anecdote. When my current Chesapeake Bay Retriever was similar age my vet told me he had an overbite. When he was back a year later the vet checked and it was gone and he has near perfect bite as an adult.

One of my pups from my first litter got her bottom jaw stuck in the crate they slept in, and she has a slight overbite to this day, is it possible something similar has happened? I know the jaw bones can grow at different rates, so you may well end up with a correct scissor bite. I must say, I'm shocked the breeder won't give a full refund, if they knew your intentions with the pup, and I'm surprised it hadn't been picked up by them or at the vet check.

Sorry what do you mean by 'her bottom jaw stuck in the crate they slept in'? I don't think they where kepted in a crate at the breeders.Tarimoor wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 1:54 pm One of my pups from my first litter got her bottom jaw stuck in the crate they slept in, and she has a slight overbite to this day, is it possible something similar has happened? Well I have had the puppy nearly two weeks now and only just informed the breeder about the problem because after alot of research and my friend (who is a vet telling) me too! She has offer to take the puppy back and only refund me £600, but surely she would have to sell him at a discounted price anyways? I did ask for a couple of hundred back to cover vet bills and they fact I cant breed from him but no luck.
Yes why the hell did her vet not pick it up?! Mine did straight away.....I know its my fault too as i didn't check but I have never had this problem in Lab pups before.

She was chewing the bars of the crate and her bottom jaw got stuck, I was there and helped get the jaw free.
Do you have a contract of sale from the breeder?

I'd not be fussed. Plenty of growing to be done yet and aid its development with plenty of chewing toys. I had a pup I bought in, grown out of that long ago and perfect bite.

Did your dog grow out of it then?Springcopse spaniels wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 1:08 pm I'd not be fussed. Plenty of growing to be done yet and aid its development with plenty of chewing toys. I had a pup I bought in, grown out of that long ago and perfect bite.

Its arguably better to be overshot rather than under, in some breeds such as Flatcoats the jaws grow at different rates, the upper slower and they usually end up with good bites when overshot as pups. I have no idea whether this applies to Labs, 9mm is a Hell of a lot to make up though.

If you just want the dog as a working dog and you like the temperament, I just accept the small discount and caarry on. If I'd have paid more money and had acquired the dog to add to a breeding program, then I'd give the dog back - but as this isn't the case, although not ideal, I'd live with it.
