Martin Deeley

Post by newf »

Below, is sad news from Gary Wilkes Facebook page. Personally, I liked the man and admired his significant contribution to the world of dogs:

On 6 Aug, 2019 Martin Deeley , the Executive Director Past President and Co Founder of the International Association of Canine Professionals and author passed away peacefully at Orlando Health Central Hospital, Orlando Florida.

Very sad to hear the news. I knew Martin from our days in the burgeoning APDT - in the mid-90's. When APDT became a 'our way or the highway' social club, Martin decided to create an open forum for dog trainers - the International Assoc. of Canine Professional. It still thrives as an open forum. They even let me speak there a couple times. ;)

I will miss his wit, charm, smarts and steadiness. A life well-lived.

He certainly was an influential guy who punched above his weight on the world scene. I remember reading his books and some of his articles. Didn’t always agree with him but sad news.

Just revisiting Martin's passing - came up in conversation today with an administrator and "top dawg" of an 'Merican forum who was unaware, and I ascertained that nobody in gundogs but those attuned through the gundogtrainingforum.co.uk would know about Mr. Deeley's being deceased. Never mentioned on any other websites/forums/chat boards, and could find no obituary or listing for memorial service - closest I could catch up to for information was a FB post from the International Association of Canine Professionals the day he died https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php? ... %22R%22%7D Odd that there seemed to be so little recapping his life, especially from the aulde sod - surprising.

Apart from his books I doubt many in the UK would have heard of him, especially the younger generation. He rather flew the nest to his adopted country before making much of a mark in the U.K. Apart from his game fair and video commentaries I’m not sure he actually trialled dogs in the U.K. And you guys make a much bigger fuss of celebrity trainers with all your ‘Halls of Fame’ and such like. :-D We’re a bit more low key.

I think he rather cooked his goose in the UK by expounding on the merits of e-collars.

His goose, maybe - but didn't cook up any canards (Eng. def.) as could be discerned from "this side." (Of course, not :-p.) Just got a little passe with what he conveyed about the e-collar and training a (retrieving) gundog. But that's another story - still curious (even after the respective [and respectful] responses) as to why he seemingly vanished without a trace of an obituary or memorial in the gundog world.

Talk to enough people and you'll probably find your answer....
I however met him on two occasions and undertook some dog Photography for one of his books. Still waiting for payment.

I met him once and also listened to him doing a commentary on the gundog demo at the Game Fair which got me going a bit, possibly not everybody's cup of tea

He contributed here, a few years ago on a thread regarding e-collars (can't find it now!).

Cheers, Terry
