I was listening to the "Hunting Dog Podcast" the other night and a short discussion came up about these 'Hybrid Retrievers'. Essentially, a Labrador crossed with a GSP. The guest said he hunted over a few but neither of them pointed, however, they did hunt close.
This conversation got me thinking, again, why with all the old tried and true breeds about would someone have enough hybris to think they are going to reinvent the wheel?
Why can't they just go and get a good dog and leave well enough alone ? Or, better still, just improve on the good stock around ?

Ego and lack of real ability
Using a term like `hybrid' must be a modern thing ( marketing crap ) much like the amalgamations of two breed names to create a `new breed'....I guess crossbred doesn't have the same individuality which you can attach the price tag too.
As for my own breed, I know I can be rather protective of it as it is a numerically small breed, and it wouldn't take long to totally mess it up with a few bad apple breeders wanting to promote a `new breed' for themselves. It doesn't help when the registration society goes against the breed club and facilitates it
ps Naj, they are not mongrels, as mongrel is the term used to describe pups of unknown parentage

And this is a point made very clear when , like me you call it for what it is to the proud owner of the aforementioned `hybrid' oodle or poo
There are some perfectly good crossbreeds out there , equally there are some rubbish ones too, just as in the purebred circles. The difference is in the potential future breeding results, passing on those good traits, is statistically much lower from a crossbred than from a pure line. It is because those lines have been honed over generations to give more reliable results, with all the `hard' culling of yesteryear. This is what gives that
improved chance that you'll carry over what the breed/line has shown in the current dog your breeding from.
Irresponsible breeders will breed irresponsibly, its a fact of life. People will buy pups at ridiculous prices because they are stupid, and therefore support the trade. I mean come on, after decades of animal welfare charities giving specific advise on how to buy a puppy ( and how not to

). You still see numpties going and buying pups `online' and not seeing the pup with its dam or visiting the breeder.... stop the world I want to get off
