DOG owners in Marlborough are on high alert after a cocker spaniel died and three more dogs are suspected to have caught a deadly disease called Alabama rot after walking in West Woods.

A woman from Swindon took her two cocker spaniels to the woodland with her friend from Marlborough, and her cocker spaniel last week.

But when sores started appearing on their legs the owners grew concerned and went to Drove Veterinary Hospital in Swindon.

They were referred to Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Winchester, who have been researching the disease since it first came to the UK in 2012...

Bit late to this one but, my BC had something like this and after £800 worth of tests they diagnosed it as an Auto Immune skin disease but after seeing this I believe she had this... She had wounds all over the top half of her body she's now on steroids for the rest of her life... Just be careful and keep an eye out on your dogs because it starts off invisible!

It is odd to me that despite the NA name and apparently NA origins of this disease the only place I have heard of it is on this forum. I did a quick google search today and the vast majority of “hits” take me back to UK cases. The bacteria/virus may have been first identified here but it seems to have found a more hospitable environment in the UK?

It would have been but we have a strict no advertising rule apart from long term regular contributors who have an opportunity to advertise in that section of the forum. It was a tricky one for me, sorry!

I don't understand how its spread. Its now been detected about 16 miles from where I stay. It seems to jump from area to area. Is this disease a generalism for something else. I don't understand how it started and the explanation about being in mud, well my dogs have been running in mud since I had my first and been doing so since dogs appeared. I would agree it could be airborne through rain dispersal but why selective in which area it decides to fall in? I have not read as much as I should about it I just find it a strange illness inflicting our dogs presently.

I have also seen an increase in stomach bug ailments in the dogs in my area over the past few years as well.

It also seems to affect a very few dogs in areas where multiple dogs use the same ground for exercise.

From time time my dogs over the years my dogs suffer scabbing on paws after introduction to new cover. I have also seen sticky scabs or grazes suffered in cover also which i clean and disinfect, pine tree plantations dont know why. This quickly clears up and I wonder if being selective the dogs that suffer AR have weaker immune due to other hidden ailments that cause their ultimate demise.
