Vest or bag

Post by ESS69 »

As the title says, vest or bag?

And for each one, what makes?

Vest.

Much more comfortable to wear. More stable, doesn’t swing and bop the dog on the head. Carries loads of gear.

I have a Jack Pyke which is fleece lined for winter and I use a musto gilet in the summer with two big front pockets and a massive poachers pocket in the back.

I also have “pockets on a belt” which is handy but they do bounce around a bit.....

Neither, a small knapsack when hunting over my dogs. As to training, well, my dogs are older and experienced with game, so training outside of that is now infrequent. However, when I do train, I don't need much to hide three balls and a tennis racket. On occasion, I'll substitute the balls with a couple of dummies, still, I'm never far from my vehicle, unless hunting. :)

PS. good one MM !

Bag
A well schooled dog will open doors, a poor one closes them quickly.

I belong to the school of thought that believes "never stand if you can sit" so I prefer a bag. I can, much more quickly, take off a bag, place it over a fallen tree or boulder to keep my bum dry and then do the same in reverse.

I've had two vests but gave away both of them. They are no use at all for holding the numbers of birds possible at driven shoots.

As to type of gamebag , I prefer a posties bag to anything else ! They cost nowt, they are very capacious, they can be washed inside and out , they are very lightweight compared to shop bought bags and, the modern ones are bright red so when picking up behind a gun who isn't very safe , the posties bag can literally save your life. I used to swing it in front of me if I was picking up anywhere near the guns.

I have owned several big, shop bought bags but a posties bag beats them all hands down.

Fortis vest for training, used a bag for years and wouldn’t go back now. Know what is in each pocket quickly so don’t need to rummage about a bag while a young dog stops and wonders WTF I am doing. And just generally more comfortable.

Montrose rope & sail game bag for rabbiting and real work, although I use a game carrier picking up that I can hang over my shoulder. Even four or five birds in a game bag puts a very uneven load through the spine. It’s bearable but why do it if there is an alternative.

Neither for me, I used to carry a bag full of dummies but I now use a couple of disc dummies or tennis balls so pockets are enough. Paring down to the essentials in me old age. :-D Shoot days its a game carrier.
A gilet isn't the same as a training vest, the latter have multiple big pockets for carrying dummies etc. A Gilet is only ok if you go minimalist like me.
