I must be lazy. Doesn't sound like a retirement job to me. :snooty: Take away one of the digits, the 2 or the 5, and I'd be okay. Then again, can I take my quad? :)

Last one I did ended up a run, dogs had no time to work and a rather disappointing day. The keeper did not last the season. Birds just sat tight and were walked over by beaters. I think the Keeper was trying to have more drives but birds were their if he settled down and beat it correctly. Worse day I have ever had my dogs started quartering and ended up going straight. The flankers/stops were blamed for bad drives as they were out of position, then it was peregrines spotted keeping birds from flying, then picker ups were told they were crap as well and needed beaters to hunt the area as their dogs were not able only to do marks and nice blinds apparently. I even picked forward of the guns and loaders, they never marked any down, My Meah and Heidi had a great time picking. God it was bad, only folks not blamed by the keeper were the underkeeper's, poor they all were and their dogs were shite as well and head keeper dog ended up beside me as it got to point. A well oiled machine with regimentally drilled it was not.

Sounds a right carry on 🥴

I need to have a day on a grouse moor though, just so i can tick it off me list, preferably not a 20mile hike job though 🤪

I think most beaters will be be on foot all day this season. It's almost impossible to get transport from drive to drive and maintain social distancing.

As I said to a local keeper, this season is going to be like an episode of SAS are you tough enough!!!

25k, its only 15 miles, which sounds a lot easier. Split it over the course of the day, say 6 hours and its 2.5 miles an hour, positively pedestrian :-)

Up hill, down dale through knee high cover it doesn't sound so pleasant after all.

Having to have dogs walking on leads between drives will be an eye opener   Never mind getting them fit for beating during the summer, I think getting them to walk at heel should be a priority for some to save their shoulders

If only it was like that...As Judy has said, add in hot weather, wet weather, midges, last beaters out have to turn round and bring the drive straight back in and no keepers will be bringing it in as slow as that. You'll be getting shouted at all the way in.....
