So sorry to read this, :( Wullie was a true legend who shared his knowledge and humour so generously with us all over the years. It was my pleasure to meet him a few times and he was just as I imagined. My thoughts are with his family and friends he will leave a cavernous whole in a lot of lives…. Heaven’s gain is our loss, liven em up Bill just like you did us… :42: :42:

My condolences to Dale and the rest of the family. The English part of me is saddened that the world of gundogs has lost one of the true remaining `dog men'. The Irish part just wants to raise a glass and thank him for being the man that he was, and to remember all the times we had a good laugh at others (and our own) misfortune in and around the world of dogs.
Whether you knew him as Trekmoor, Wullie, windem bang, Bill or even `an old goat' he always said it like it was, and if you were not too up your own backside you were wise to listen to what he had to say when it comes to training a good gundog. As a `dog man' he had more empathy with dogs than his writing of advise often failed to take into account, but I'm sure he often did it with that mischievous glint in his eye, or just to wind me up :)
They say the good die young. When it came to Bill you could say that he was the exception that proves the rule, or could say, as he probably would with that grin, that given his age, it was probably true as it could be. Either way I thoroughly enjoyed his presence, his stories and his humour as well as his knowledge, and I'll miss the `olde goat'.

ps. Just remember if given the choice all good dog men return to earth as a Cocker ... ;)

Bill, was definitely a personality that you know life would have been a bit better, if by chance, one could meet. He was a delight to read and an educator of not only how dogs tick but also those holding the lead.

Condolences to the family.

Not sure if I would want to train it though!

So sorry to hear this. I am pretty sure I watched him at the Game Fair running for Scotland in the 70's when I was a young, very keen but knew nothing spaniel owner. People like him taught me a lot for which I will always be grateful.

We had many a long chat both over the phone and when met up North. I well remember his pithy comments about someone who went to him with her Brittany. When he told her to get the dog in the water she told him the dog was her baby! His comments were hilarious. The woman never went back. He was not afraid to tell it as it was and we had many a laugh over certain peoples antics. RIP Bill I hope there are many good dogs and lots of fishing up there or I can see you telling them you won't enter the gates xxx
Me, Ghillie the Champion, Merlin the Mad. Brittanys were bred as poachers dogs.....They were an extension of the old rogue's arm, trained to look innocent and unprepossessing, all the time plotting, thinking, scheming to make game!

Thanks for all the kind words. In a sad but almost fitting conclusion to Charlies Chatter, Charlie himself was put to sleep today after his health went downhill on Saturday. I think he decided to go and join my dad and reform the double act. Now if god has a sense of humour, he'll bring my dad back as a cocker and Charlie as his trainer :-)

The thought of Charlie as Wullie's trainer does bring a smile in a very sad situation. I will hang on to that.

Please give my condolences to Dale and to you all, Charlie and Wullie will be sorely missed.

Oh no! Whilst I half expected "Charlie ya bugger" to follow his Dad quite quickly - he must have been around 14 years old - I had hoped he'd be able to keep your Mum company for a wee while, her house must feel so empty without those two larger than life characters in it.

As for either of them coming back to haunt us, I'm making damned sure my next pup is a bitch, just in case... Although a trans gender Charlie is a bit of a worry.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.
