Chemical Castration Thoughts.

Im considering chemical castration and wondered what peoples experiences on here were. I’ve a 5 year old cocker and he is a great dog, really works well for me. I don’t won’t to breed off him yet as I’m not ready for a pup yet, but he is a bloody nightmare when there are dogs in heat in the neighbourhood. He literally spends the evening with his nose pressed to the fence sniffing and whingeing! It clearly drives him to despair and he a nightmare to walk at this time as well.

We live in a pretty densely dog populated rural town and it seems there is someone in heat every other month which is driving him mad. My main concern in doing it is that it affects his working drive as the testosterone drops, but this is based on zero veterinary knowledge on my part! What do you guys think?

Won't affect working drive but you cannot gurantee fertility once they've had the implant. It can also last a very variable time from six months to several years depending on the dog.

Thanks Miesque. The vet called that out so I was aware of the risks, however he doesn’t shoot so could not shed any light on that aspect.

A friend of mine has her lad chemically castrated as he lives with entire bitches, it hasn't affected his work drive at all and he is much happier at home.
