Re: Fireworks
Well we had a lab 5 years ago at 10 month old around the same time Lowick had it's 150th anniversary of the 'lil royal' show in the September. A massive firework display (perhaps sounding much louder in quiet rural places) it went on for about 4 hours. Our little bitch was a nervous wreck which seemed to totally change her attitude to noise. Probably they're were lots of other factors going on that we didn't click on to (and still haven't) but that was the turning point for a little bitch that had seemed so brave, so out there and so wick to a nervous wreck with noise. Was it the fireworks?....I don't know but I'll never take the chance again, I'll always get them out of the way in future. We tried everything to re introduce her to normal noise/life sounds but to no avail. She was the chosen one out of a much awaited litter and my husband was gutted. She's now a pet that we treat very carefully to not upset.

Re: Fireworks
One of our labs was untroubled by gunshot, but fireworks make her a nervous wreck. My old Goldie wet herself with fear when she heard them, twice she ran away when they went off unexpectedly, she just couldn't think straight when she heard them and just ran away in a blind panic. We were lucky to find her on one occasion, hiding in a ditch on a freezing cold night. It was an absolute blessing when both old girls went deaf with age.
Thankful Max & Paddy aren't troubled by them but I remember how much distress they caused our other dogs. They should be banned.

Re: Fireworks
One of my spanners doesn't like them. The same dog runs about in delight when shotguns are firing nearby. I sometimes wonder if this is because many of the bangs come from rockets and it's the flash as much as the overhead bang that worries him.

Re: Fireworks
my older lab seems to react stronger the the screeching whizzy sounds - kind of builds up to the bang. then again it could just be becaue he knows a bang is gona follow.
i got my old air rifle out yesterday and fired it a couple of times without any pellets to try and get them used to random bangs in the build up to bonfire night, the old boy even wasnt happy with that but the pup started jumping up at me like he wanted a go. I did get the pup to sit next to me while i fired it then he seemed to get really excited - not scared but excited.
Made me wonder if there is something build into gundogs that makes tem reac to a 'bang' - is there such a thing as genetic memory

Re: Fireworks
It never used to kick off until begining of November up there PERCE, I always remember going into the shops in Richmond to buy my BangersPERCE wrote:Season seems to have started with us this weekend. I know I played with them as a kid but I do wish they'd ban them.
Then going out on Mischief night (Nov 4th) around where i was dragged up as a nipper
(the Sh#t hole they call Colburn
But i have to agree with you, in my 40's now, got my dogs and im not a fan of them. Fireworks should only be used for the big shows by qualified people. Plus it gets earlier each year and they seem to be on sale from now until the new year

Re: Fireworks
We have two shops in town sell them 365 days, we hear them nearly every week!
