How to add an Avatar
How to Add Your Own Avatar
1 - Go to the Board Index.
2 - Go to the User Control Panel (UCP) by clicking on the link (top left)
3 - You will get a new page with on the left hand side a vertical menu with several 'tabs', "Overview" will be opened when you log in to your UCP, but the second tab is called "Profile", click on it. It will open then you have to click on "Edit Avatar", click on it.
4 - A new page is opened, the first thing is: "Current Image". It shows your current Image, if you don't have one yet, its a grey block with a cross through it. The maximum and minimum dimensions are given under "Currenty Image" to, same for the Maximum Filesize.
5 - If you do have one already but you want to remove it, you can check the field under your current Avatar that says "Delete image" then press Submit
6 - Link off-site: Here you can insert the link to an image already on the internet (Photobucket, Imageshack, Tinypic etc offer free image hosting), which you like to have as an avatar.
7 - Avatar Dimensions: You can resize the current avatar, or the one you're about to add. You need to fill in the width x height giving in pixels (px). Leave it 0 x 0 to leave the size as it originaly was. Min 20x20 max 120x90.
8 - If you've got it in the way you want it, press Submit.
9 - You've now succesfully edited/added your own avatar!

Thanks for that! At last I've got the point that you can't upload direct from your own PC (though I don't understand why not!!)

Re: How to add an Avatar
Thanks for these instructions. Unfortunately I still cannot get it. I'm going to need to borrow next door's child. I managed to upload photos to Photobucket and now I just keep making more copies of the same which don't go any where. I really am beyond hope. Maybe I'll draw a picture instead. Aaaaaaaggggghhhhh!!!

Re: How to add an Avatar
The reason a lot of these forums don't allow you to upload an image directly from your PC is storage space. Every Avatar/photo takes up an amount of space and space costs money! It also increases the amount of "traffic" going through the forum as every body who views your avatar effectively downloads it from where it is stored onto their PC - at least temporarily. The way round this is to use/abuse someone else's space and bandwith - this is where Photbucket et al come in. They provide photo/picture hosting but pay for it from advertising or selling extra service so it's still "free" to use.
When you are selecting your avatar from whichever site (photobucket etc) you are storing you need to find and copy and paste the link.
This should almost always start with http:// and end with .jpeg and will often contain a large number of seemingly random letters and numbers.
Hope this helps!

Re: How to add an Avatar
Hi Damian,
Here's a little more info for you:
When you get to the profile settings for the avatar it should look like this:

Next you need to select & copy the web-address of the image that you wish to use, for instance here's an image that I uploaded to photobucket recently:
Now paste this web address into the "Link off site" box:

Next, as this image is 'too large' at 334x292 pixels I need to set the 2 Avatar dimensions. So I choose the maximum 100 px x 90 px - this resizes the image to this size:

Now you should be able to click submit & your avatar will be available!
You can't click on the image before or after setting it up.
Where have you uploaded your image to? Photobucket.com or Flickr or somewhere else?
Do you know how big it is?
Iain

Cheers Smudge, the instructions just worked for me straight from the box.
And now we have an Avatar, I just wish it would make me $ billion at the box office too...

I'm no techy
the way i did it was.
select a picture that you have uploaded to photobucket, then re size it to a small size. Once done save it to your PC. Then
upload it to the forum from the PC.
Does that make sense, i confuse myself sometimes
