Hidding them and also put them in deep grass. I had one bait through the shed whilst the dog was sitting and he sat and didnt chase.

Re: steadiness to game/drop
Right, To me if the dog is steady to live game, he should drop, as in steday to thrown dummies. I have taken him out on 3 occasions now after planting these birds and cannot get him to point!!!!!!!!!! Its driving me mad, he is sanjon bred, and i am umming and arring about buy a springer!!!!!!! He just run up to the planted bird and pegged it. As where he comes on a super strong point on the cat next door. When he has been out in the field, he does go in to a stalk mode and does come on point but stalks game. I have been lobbing the pigeon about in the shed to try and tempt the dog to drop and it does seem to work. I think trying to encourage this dog to point is going to warp him in my view.
Re: steadiness to game/drop
And also the reason he pointed them in the crate was that i positioned them in the same area he normally points the cat.
Re: steadiness to game/drop
well I am no pointer man!¬
but a very good one taught me that this breed points to the flush, not the 'dropped dummy,or shot game', which as you describe.
The dog learns that if it goes to close or stands too still the game will 'go away'?..so it 'pressures', the game on point 'to keep it thier'!
So encouraging him to point?, should be encouraging him to 'flush' (imo)..then you can 'drop'!
just my view , now I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM

Re: steadiness to game/drop
I thought he already was flushing - that was the problem - he just wouldn't point them?

no he has never flushed except for after a point where we have put a pigeon down.

I read it that he was already pointing!..Not Flushing
chasing dont count, and any discipline after that is a waste of time(imo)
Re: steadiness to game/drop
He did point and hold a rabbit, but songbirds, swallows he pegs it. He will not point anything i put down. could it be my hand scent?
