Gaining permission to train on private land

Post by heckler »

I would like to be able to train on private land out of the way of everyone else and so that I can use my starting pistol and/or dummy launcher without any problems.
Anyone doner this and obtained permission?
How did you go about it?
Did you get permission in writing and if so what wording did you use?

Thanks

All I did was to go ask ask the land owner politely if I could
use some of this waste land and farm tracks to train my dog,
Also using the starter pistol.
His reply "thank you for asking yes you can"
I have his phone number in my mobile is case
I take him a bottle of white and red every christmas, sorted

I too approached several farmers locally and got in the main favourable responses too. :) I now use two peoples land for training purposes and they each get a brace of trout in the summer and a bottle of Raspberry vodka and an oven ready brace of phezzies at Christmas.

I only use my launcher on one persons land though because it’s miles away from houses and has no public footpaths on it. TBH it is highly unlikely I would cause a problem there but better safe than sorry.

My letter reads To whom it may concern, I blank/blank of Deepest Darkest Lincolnshire confirm that the land situate at blank address is within my legal ownership and Rascal of Deepest Darkest Lincolnshire has my permission to use dummy launchers and blank firing pistols upon it for the purpose of gundog training.

I can be contacted on............... mobile number for any further clarification if required.

Signed.................

OTT maybe but it might save me spending time in the cop shop, mind you the landowner often laughs and says if I’m joking with him “just remember if the police ring”.............. :naughty:

As a land owner (pocket handkerchief size) there are two points that worry me:

One: when I take my own ESS dogs on my own land (with my sheep and my dogs are not a problem), some tourists sees me and takes their dog off lead and my sheep get chased. Until this year I had a tup that would go for attack and I need to train up a replacement.

Two: If I give permission for someone to train a dog on my land and there is an issue - right of access on the one side and a starting pistol or dummy launcher being used on the other - where am I legally? I think I would be in the frame for compensation if there was an incident.

So, anyone who asks can be on my land (without a sheep chaser) so long as we have no formal agreement, just right of access.
Another view.

Most of the land I now have access to has been gained by working on shoots, dogging in for keepers etc etc but a polite asking should be all you need. Good luck.

I only work on my own with the dog on rough shoots on everyfarm in the village, I dont go on shoots. I would approach say a few farms when you have the time, introduce yourself, And explain what it is you want to do. Explain you will have respect for all property and live stock. Always give them your address, And always take your dog along, I found taking the dog a great impression, it shows you have a gundog not a hunting dog, ie a lurcher. Always buy them a bottle of wine, drink etc at xmas. And always try and start a conversation with something they have, such as what horse is the tractor? etc, i found this brilliant as most farmers love bragging about machinery. You might get some say no, but 3 out of 10 is better than none at all, and also go and ask as they wont come and ask you! Best of luck!
