greetings from the States
Having lurked for a time, I decided to stay and continue to learn. As I have some American Cocker Spaniels in the field, I like to see how folks approach issues over there. We are located in the Southeast USA.
Thanks for this site. It is very informative and enjoyable, even when informal.

I'd love to see photos of working American cockers. The only ones that I've seen over here are show ring dishmops that would struggle to retrieve a budgie from a living room carpet.

We have those too here in the U.S.madrags wrote:I'd love to see photos of working American cockers. The only ones that I've seen over here are show ring dishmops that would struggle to retrieve a budgie from a living room carpet.
Mine are not FTCs, but have earned AKC hunting certificates (Juniors, Seniors, and working one at Master), and American Spaniel Club hunting certificates (Working Dog Excellent). We bred & produced two young ring champions who are hellions in the field - lots of prey drive. Now, working these young ones on good basics, obedience, and manners.
Amateur Cocker field trials are nearly non-existent in the States, and only just in the past several years become available, if I recall correctly. It was all Open or nothing - still largely is the case. Trials are a bit out of my range at the moment.
We are a breed apart from your Cockers, but have not lost the drive, nose, and the other good things - just lost lots of folks willing to put in the time, effort, & patience it takes to produce a proper Spaniel gundog.
Locals while out hunting still think my little 21# bitch is a (squirrel) Feist! Spaniels are not really seen in the South.
