really thought I was getting somewhere.
The advice worked and I was getting a reliable retrieve to hand indoors and in the garden, but when it comes to outside she just seems too excited and the dummy is spat at my feet.
On the advice of my trainer, I stopped all dummy work for a week to see if we could break the habit.
We gave her one retrieve on tuesday, and got it to hand....i thought we'd cracked it.

Out today and again, dummy spat at my feet. Probably my fault as probably ground too exciting, but have nowhere 'boring' to go...she sees excitement everywhere
Really disappointed and downhearted.
Dunno whether this should be in the rant page or what....
was going to ask can this be overcome, but of course I know it can, I've seen the pics of forum members do it, but I'm wondering if I can overcome it.

Have you tried a tennis ball?

she likes a dummy better than a tennis ball, she has a tendency to nudge the tennis ball, then run on, especially when it's an 'easy' retrieve, such as short grass. She much prefers a bit of a challenge, but she seems to think it's 'job done' when she reaches me with it.
I've cut out any verbal cues

Might have been covered in another post, but have you tried putting it back in her mouth when she spits it out & making her hold until you take it off her? Or, have you tried standing in deeper/heavier cover to take the delivery? And are you reaching straight in for the delivery as she approaches, or are you standing there waiting for her to 'present' to you?

have been putting it back in her mouth, she spits it out, I put it back, this goes on a couple of times before she holds it long enough for me to take out of her mouth and praise her. I think by that stage that she's disassociated this pantomime from the actual retrieve.

I will try going into deeper into the cover.
I stopped reaching down for the delivery as it seemed to be yet another cue to drop to dummy. I seem to get it closer if i stand straight and say nowt.
To add insult to injury, she has just nabbed and delivered to hand perfectly 2 toilet rolls and one kids teddy :brickwall:

Were you sitting down when you accepted them? :)
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

no, that's the thing, she ran up to me proud as punch, stood beside me, tail wagging, first toilet roll she jumped up and held it no prob, i took it from her....then I got a seated delivery with the second toilet roll....she's happy enough to hold stuff in the house while I rub her chest, I can bend down, stand up again, walk away, come back and she'll still hold them, and give them to me the second i ask for them.

What would she do if you drove a car she is used to into a grass or a stubble field , threw the dummy then sent her for it as you sat waiting for her with the car door open ?

Naj's suggestion of standing in fairly thick cover to take the dummy also often works.
