Welcome Crowdie,
I would just keep it simple and go along with this advice.

I'm told a lower pitch carries further in damp, moist conditions and a higher pitch further in bright dry conditions.
However, I use a 210.5 for both Retrievers and Spaniels and they can all hear it, in all conditions, as far away as they generally get whilst working. Whether they listen or not is another matter. Stick to the whistle you have, it will be fine if you train the dog to respond to it. :-D
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Ive got a 210.5 for the pinger and works fine, although im a tool and always forget/loose it.

Ive got a pretty loud whistle through my teeth and can imitate 'pips' ok, and ive found no difference between the response received. Ive even tried a whistle one of my rucksacks has on, and got the same effect!

I would suggest most dogs would respond to different whistles? But thats just me based on my daft one, who probably ignores me to equal standards with both! :D
