Think it depends on where you live, your contacts, what you want the dog for, what your knowledge/experience of dogs is and what risks (however remote) you're prepared to take.

If you insist that only FTCH X FTCH will do then its going to hurt the wallet somewhat.

The costs of buying your dog/bitch, training it up, competing, doing the health tests, registering your kennel name with the KC, paying to get your bitch covered, registering the pups with the KC, the vet care of the bitch and worming vaccinating, microchipping, docking &etc all add to the costs you need to recover in the price of the pup.

There are good, sound, non reg, working dogs out there for reasonable money but unless you see the parents in action you've no guarantee they'll be any use and the parents are unlikely to be health tested (but then a lot of the top Springers don't seem to be either  :? ). I may well be wrong but IMHO the biggest difference between an FTW and a decent shoot dog is down to the trainer/handler and whether the owner can be arrissed with tests/trials, as they say on the lottery you have to be in it to win it.

Its something I've been debating with a litter due next week. Do you put a price on them to sell or do you stick to your guns and ask for a price to deter tyre kickers.

Producing a litter isn't cheap and although you shouldn't breed for the money, not being out of pocket and getting a bit back for 8 weeks work looking after them should be taken into consideration without taking the pi$$.

When you weigh it all up:
£400 Stud fee
£80 Diesel to stud dog
£200 whelping box
£30 each pup for docking and chipping
£17 each pup for registration
£50 for worming
£100 for food/puppy packs
£50 for new vet bed etc

For a litter of 6 you're looking at £1200 or so, and thats assuming you don't have any extra vet bills to pay for such as caesarians.

That £1200 eats up the cost of two pups if you sell them at £600, if you're keeping one yourself that's another £600, so potentially a profit of £1800.

Like I say, £1800 for 8 weeks work trying to produce the most healthy, strong pups you can isn't too much to ask for I don't think.

There's one winner & one champion in the first three generations of these pups, 1/2 the price & they'd be about right in my opinion but when you see sprockers advertised for £450 & designer shite for £800 & more, good luck to them.

I had someone call me asking for help in finding a cocker pup. I called them back 3 days later only to be told they couldn't wait so went and got one from the local paper. £600 for a gold bitch with no papers, you cant help some people.
If it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun.

Thats best case isn't it, worst case is you have a litter of one which you keep and are nearly £1000 out of pocket - it'd have been cheaper buying a pup lol

The breeder I bought my brittany pup from travelled all the way over to Germany in order to use the stud dog he wanted. His bitch had just one pup ! I paid a good price for her but the breeder must have lost a lot of money plus the use of his bitch during the puppy rearing period. I felt very sorry for him, he had pups booked in from that mating (a repeat mating) from as far away as New Zealand.
I think the litter was pre-booked even before the mating took place.

if i breed a litter , sell them at £400 quid a pup and there is 5 pups i still make a profit, the difference between a ftw and a decent shoot dog, is pace, style and soundness..
