Copied from another post
He are just a few things
This may help you or not ? lol
Your dog will be expected to.
These are things I train for having made mistakes over the years.
Firstly turn a blind eye to what ever the keepers dogs are doing they are supposed to do that lol?
1. Get on a beaters cart with other dogs and other beaters. (can sometimes put a dog off)
2. Make sure your dog is used to you carrying a stick and tapping it. (without the dog trying to bite it. lol)
3. Work hedge rows and dykes in. (Hedge row that are hollow in the middle can be a problem)
4. Work close in woodland with other dogs. (Hunting with other dogs that might not be as well trained as yours)
5. Push the birds towards a flush point. (normally on big driven days it the beaters job to push not flush the birds to a crop cover then the birds are flushed over the guns in a controlled manner)
6. Recall when tapping or keeper has stopped the line. (Stop whistle and recall are a must)
7. Cracking off flags (make sure he his used to this noise)
8. Heel in crop cover (it will be difficult to walk a lead on through maize, remember when heeling through maize the dogs view is different to yours at his eye level he will be seeing possibly hundreds of birds)
And you
Enjoy the banter on the beating cart, its great
Keep in line with the keeper and listen to what he is saying.
If you dog happens to pick a bird after the drive tell a picker up, they may have marked it at be looking for it later.
I get retrieves now and again,
You could offer to help the picker up at dinner break.
