Quite the contrary. It looked to me like there was game in front of the dog. This was proved after it cast off to the right and left the bird. Anyway like I said, I am not meaning to be critical, just an observation.

It's difficult when you're not actually there but I read the dog as SP did - didn't look to be much wind, mind. Different strokes for different folks, but pheasant/game is scarce where I live & I need the dog to work out every potential contact, so I never call a dog off a point, even when I think the dog unsure, but always honour it by walking-in & letting the dog work it out for itself. Nice bit of country to hunt. :-D

Just noticed this post ..... I very seldom call a dog off a point but if I think the point is an "iffy" one I do urge the dog to move on from the point ,sometimes from considerable distances away from the dog. Non productive points are always going to happen occasionally but I reduce how often they happen by not letting the dog think I will walk out to them .... some dogs seem to think my close presence is a form of praise for their actions . I try to avoid even that form of "praise" for non-productive points.

So, I command the dog to continue hunting and it either does that or it moves just enough to either get a solid point on game or a damn good bump on game. I find the bumps become fewer as the dog gains in experience and so do the non-productive points.

That's why I never praise or 'school' the dog on point but walk in 'neutrally' & only praise or say anything after a productive point. A dog will usually move on an unproductive before I get there & my current dog will often glance at me - something she never does on a 'productive' - in which case I turn & walk away, and she either resumes quartering or moves forward to double-check & then casts herself off hunting again. I'm also shooting over a dog so it wouldn't be of much use to command the dog to hunt on or call it away, especially from a distance, because if there is something there then I don't want to risk it being flushed while I'm out of shot.
