20:20 Hindsight
Re: 20:20 Hindsight
Doesn't everybody believe that what they are doing at the time is right? A lot of dog owners still punish their dogs when they eventually return after ignoring a recall, but they think that is right. Then when the dog stops returning they blame it.

Socialisation is not rocket science. It's just getting your dog used to other dogs. However you do that is up to you. Top tip though. Do it within the bird dog work environment, bird dogs just seem to do better that way, they're funny like that.emg4458 wrote:tt123 - socialisation is a whole different ball game that I would have done very differently. If you search on this site under training, you'll find LOTS of theories about it. As a newbie myself, I think, as long as you believe what you're doing is right, it probably is AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME. But. Time will tell whether it really was

These gay Gawpers live in their own little World don't they?
Most of us don't have access to the work environment until they are ready to work, way too late. Socialising is a whole topic on its own but one thing I learned is keep it calm and pick and chose which dogs you allow the pup to socialise with in its early days, its a learn how to meet and greet thing not riotous play, which is probably what you meant.
And introduce the pup to umbrellas! I found out my Flatcoat was frightened of them on a shoot day when they were being used to flush birds - not the best time to find out she would bark her head off!
I think we all do things differently with each and every dog, at least we should do, its a slow learning process finding out how to get the best out of them.

HaHa, yes Touche. The Gay Gawpers can be a little eccentric. Socialising is usually pre fun stuff, so they usually are snobs and focused on other things. But sometimes they have to test their social skills.Judy wrote:These gay Gawpers live in their own little World don't they? Most of us don't have access to the work environment until they are ready to work, way too late. And I hadn't realised just how much I would fall in love with him, and enjoy the training. Sometimes it is a little challenging when I don't see the progress that I would like. But my confidence and my obsession with him is growing all the time.

Yes I would like a translation as well. Here that would be a very derogatory remark

Re: 20:20 Hindsight
Must admit I was puzzled by the words "Gay Gawpers" when they first appeared in "Libby's Diary" ..... I still don't have a clue what those words mean . There is a dance called the Gay Gordons that originated back in the days when "GAY" meant something other than it does now but the meaning of gay gawpers eludes me. To gawp means something like to look at with your mouth hanging open but how it links to gay is beyond me. When I were a lad ....ooooh-aaaarrr, there was a t.v. series called the Gay Cavalier . I wonder if the actor who played the part of the cavalier called Duval was gay and if so, in what sense of the word ?

Re: 20:20 Hindsight
Was there tv back then?
Think there was a reference to Pointers being bent, which also has two meanings, that rhymes nicely with the gawp bit of the thread which went into hunt, gawp, crunch in great detail. Its a sign of great age when you remember the Gay Cavalier but not what you read a few weeks ago... Personally I'm the other way round, I don't remember that TV prog (might not have had TV in Suffolk back when that came out) but I do remember how Gay Gawpers came into being, as well as Stumpies, Pingers, Slabs etc
PS Came out seems to have another connotation these days, is nothing safe?
