I had the exact same things not so long ago with my bitch, I was concentrating on the windscreen wiper pattern which meant using too much whistle and on at her a fair bit. Then she didnt know what she was doing wrong and kept looking at me not wanting to leave my side. I was so frustrated.

Now she is hunting much better, all I changed was less whistle and just let her do her thing. Scenty ground helped too.

She's 14 months old - why are you still messing around with balls? And how wide are your casts? If too narrow then the dog hardly has chance to get into her stride before you turn her.

If you want a windscreen wiper pattern be sure the wind is blowing towards you at ground level, if the wind is slightly across your general direction you will be fighting the dog's natural pattern which would be more on a diagonal to your track. Dog may slow up or give up.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

If you want a windscreen wiper pattern, then you won't be needing a half decent hunting dog ... :whistle

Windshield wiper pattern is only correct one time - if you are going directly into the wind. Anything else, the pattern will look different

And even then it will look different depending on the conformation of the dog…. A big rangy dog will look different hunting to a smaller closer coupled dog. As long as the dog’s covering it’s ground we shouldn’t get too hung up on “pattern”………….
