thanks Hily I think I shall take him on a small shoot on a lead and maybe let him have an easy retrieve.

In my opinion it's not a great idea to take a dog on a lead to a shoot on a lead if it has not been properly introduced to shot. Be very aware and remove the dog if it looks in any way unsure of itself or nervous. Ideally have a few birds shot for him that he can retrieve beforehand so there is a solid association.

What is your interest, Shooting or dog work?
I love it and have always wanted a quality dog, and its great when all your work comes together as a team.
If you have no experience shooting with a dog get some training days under you first, before you ruin your dog for good on a lead as SP points out

sorry did not read that the dog was not introduced to the gun so NO to taken dog to a shoot but you should go without the dog but for the same reasons stated . when the dog is ok with the noise of the gun then take him to a shoot I say use a lead until you see how he reacts with other dogs guns and the atmosphere of a shoot it has to be done at some time if you want an all round gun dog as I don't think you are after producing a trailing dog or a picking up dog just wanting a worker. My original post was to help you get over your boredom with training and not to tell you how to train your dog.

It sounds to me like you need some inspiration, get yourself to a shoot or trial if possible and look at some fantastic dogs being worked and it may rekindle your desire for training.
I can only hope that I am half the man my dog thinks I am.
