It will end when the vast majority can't afford to buy a dog any more or when everyone who has a bitch will breed from it regardless of how good it is, or not, simply because thats the only way they can get another dog.Gavin wrote:Cocker and Springer prices are also creeping up. Not sure where it will end!
Cost of pups
Re: Cost of pups
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Re: Cost of pups
The problem with pup prices is that Joe Soap who has a heap of crap bitch sees the prices being asked for well bred pups. He decides to have a litter from his rubbish bitch and to charge the same price per pup. Mugs pay that same price and the better breeders see that price being paid for rubbish puppies. He ups his price for the next litter he has ........... and so it goes on !

Re: Cost of pups
It's really all gone wrong. Those making a living out of gundogs have genuine overheads and liabilities that will have an impact on price but the hobby breeders who declare nothing jump on the bandwagon and charge the same price!
Re: Cost of pups
I think 500 quid is more than enough for an 8wk old pup. As you said Naj where the mouth is questionable... god knows i have had my fair share of gators where i have paid the aforementioned amount. Anyhoo it was an observation i have made as I still haven't found a gwp pup from suitable breeding at a sensible amount.
Re: Cost of pups
Falconers are breeding just for themselves and their friends without registering the pups. Ok if you know the provenance of them.

Re: Cost of pups
Exactly! Having said that, every year I do my books I don't earn enough from pups to pay tax, the overheads are too much!Naj wrote:It's really all gone wrong. Fair enough money for a good pup that.Rothievale wrote:Haven't decided yet as no bitches mated but probably only £50 more. Got to get each puppy microchipped now anywayDawnrazor wrote:So how much will pups be from you now?
The money Buccleuch were charging a few years back was a piece of nonsense, only stupid people pay stupid money, nothing to do with Davie, a lot of well bred promising pups went to people who could afford the price but could train a dog to sh1t in its own kennel, thinking that paying that amount would make up for thier short comings as a trainer, not what you want when you're breeding trialing spaniels and trying to build a build up a reputation, the secret is getting good pups into the hands of good trainers!
I'll be breeding a good working dog to a good working bitch, I have them both here, Halaze hickory and Saturn's spirit lines, both do 40/50 days a year, both are mute and reliable in the mouth, or I wouldn't have kept them! They'll wbe ped & reg'd.How should I charge? I've a price in mind but I'm interested in people's opinions.

Re: Cost of pups
I actually don't think £1000 for a pup from a ftch is a ridiculous price. More realistic than £1,000 for a pup from a non trialling dam who is from a famous kennels which I have discovered is the normal price!

Wullies second post reflects the above.... i wonder out of all the ftch to have been made up of various breeds in last, say 10yrs have actually made the grade to warrant a grand cash or close to it? would certainly make for interesting readingRothievale wrote:I actually don't think £1000 for a pup from a ftch is a ridiculous price. Re: Cost of pups
All this talk of money, I hope the other half doesn't read this. She thought I was nuts spending £500 on a pup! Trying to get clearance for a companion for him but not going well so far
