I also feed twice a day during the Shooting season, once early morning and again in the evening, I find this helps, it's easier to up the amount too, 1/2 in the morning and maybe 2/3 in the evening, better than one extra big meal once a day I feel.

I'd go with DRs 2 meal suggestion. Natasha on here works her dogs more than most and has posted some good info on diet and is currently involved with a monitoring project.

Agree with everyone so far, but be careful and use your common sense when adding fatty meat (tripe is also great) as too much fat can trigger pancreatitis.

My springer gets 170g of salmon and potato and half a lb of tripe once a day, you cant beat tripe for the winter months to hold weight. Not an ounce of fat on her, follow link below to see as i cant upload the picture.

Prior to trial season I condition my dogs to run multiple series in one day. Hoping to get to the third series I want them to have the endurance to finish the day and event. I have found my dogs run better and have better endurance at a certain weight. During the course of conditioning I must take a few pounds off of them due to being overweight during the off season. Also found after a certain amount of conditioning along with weight loss their metabolism changes. At that point weight starts to drop rapidly. At this point I weigh them most every day. Also they get increased amounts of food to maintain and control their weight. Much like a boxer getting ready for a fight.

The only thing that kept weight on my bitch in the shooting season was butchers tripe, and our Sunday dinner food scraps helped ;-)
