Re: Red Labs
That's good advice, my wife always seems to want the "per wee soul" that looks in need of mothering !

CC, there's only one "red dog" retriever and it's native to your neck of the globe -CockerCanuck wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2017 11:14 am I will give a bit of advice based on personal experience. If you have your heart set on a black pup but the litter is of mixed colours don't take your wife to help pick!![]()

though to counter your "spousal" tale, when my toller passed, I decided to get another "red dog" as kind of a larf for my training partners who had long countenanced the toller's quirks - and put down on a deposit on a pup from a Lab litter I'd heard about in Devil's Lake, N. Dak., sired by NFC Dewey's Drake of Moon River. Already had her name picked out and the breeder was using it on the pup whilst still in the litter - two weeks later he calls and tells me "my" pup had a scratched retina, and he couldn't sell her in good faith. Instead, I got the only "non-fox red" in the litter, and any disappoint subsided when she started to finish derbies before she was a year old and then reserve-JAM'd a 75-dog Q at 13 months that she actually had won, until the last bird.

Re: Red Labs
On the other hand good marriages are built on compromise and my wife has always been supportive of "another dog!". The truce we have reached is I pick the litter, she picks the pup. Really a small concession I have not found you can tell much about character from 8 week old puppies that you can take to the bank anyway. If the litter is good breeding there are good odds that any individual within it will be as well.

Re: Red Labs
Quite a lot of the red stuff for sale has chocolate somewhere in the recent pedigree, there's often show dogs in there too.shamykebab wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2017 12:21 am I can't abide breeders charging large sums for fox red parents or a red litter, more often than not bred for colour rather than working ability. Will they go the way of chocolates? Fashion victim buyers will always make easy targets for these breeders.

Clever use of the word champions?
Hello Thorne has had more studs than any recent FTCH that I can find with the exception of Mediterian Blue

Re: Red Labs
We had a Red Lab, headbanger of a thing and just a flat out plonker.
Wasn't the best looking of labs, looked very houndy (with a nose to match). Certainly not the best looking one we had but he was always the one that got the comment 'what a good looking Lab'.
Personally like the yellows but we have a token Black lad and he is lovely. Wouldn't go out of my way for another red (based purely on our single exposure to a Red dog, disregarding all the good ones i that have seen in the universal way of the dog world).
Really fancy a chocolate though.

Buy a dairy milk and give your head a shake!
(Seriously though, for all the bad rep there are some half-decent chocs about if you know where to look. Di Stevens has reasonable one, handsome thing too, although most of his pups go to pet/'fundog' homes)
cheers,
Alice.

Coming in with a counter to your comments, Dan - one of the most beautiful working Labs I've seen, a British dog owned by a friend from upstate New York, and even some of the better photos here http://castleheightsgundogs.tripod.com/id3.html don't do him justice...Dan Newcombe wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2017 12:18 pm We had a Red Lab, headbanger of a thing and just a flat out plonker.

That dog has Aughacasla Sam in his pedigree, a dog that usually appears in the pedigrees of the better bred reds.crackerd wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2017 4:19 pmComing in with a counter to your comments, Dan - one of the most beautiful working Labs I've seen, a British dog owned by a friend from upstate New York, and even some of the better photos here http://castleheightsgundogs.tripod.com/id3.html don't do him justice...Dan Newcombe wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2017 12:18 pm We had a Red Lab, headbanger of a thing and just a flat out plonker.

Re: Red Labs
Contender may I get this straight - so your dog has or carries PRA even though he was tested clear as a pup?
Re: Red Labs
??? Nope, what I wrote was that the dog has bad elbows, something that runs in the line as well as PRA or written more clearly bad ebows, PRA and MRD runs in the line - he was DNA tested 'clear' as a puppy and also screened for MRD (needs to be done before 12 weeks of age to get a definite answer) which he was also clear from. Hope this makes more sense...
