Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
Interesting about the colour not recognised bit, the last litter I saw like that went into reams of explanations of how they had decided not to register them with the KC as it didn't fit their breeding ethos but they had registered them with some other organisation where apparently you paid them a few quid and they registered them on their own data base. Yeah right!!
You are just jealous DR that your litters don't sell for £20K a pop and the pups have to do absolutely nothing!!

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
I love all these posts about the price of pups, particularly on fb.
2k on a dog, break that down, less than £200 a year, for your best friend soulmate fur baby etc etc
Many spend more a year on Costa than the price of a pup, never heard of a Latte being a soulmate!!
Fact is pups are sold far too cheap and far too easily in the main and with the licensing regs now taking hold I can see prices increasing and rightly so.

Expressed as a proportion of the average wage 'normally priced' pups are way more expensive then they were in the '70's and '80'swhy should breeders be charging even more than they did back then?
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
I recently heard of "highly bred" or trial bred lab pups costing £1,200 . I got my first lab pup for £8 and he worked fine doing what I needed back then. My next lab pup , about 8 years later cost me either £25 or £30 …. I can't remember which..... and she won field trials and got to the championships. My next one cost £60 and she also won trials and got to the championships .
O.K. so about 30 - 40 years have passed since then but I can see no good reason at all for the prices some breeders are now asking for their pups. I know there is an upward spiral of price inflation but surely not such as to cause a price rise of something like 40 times as much for a quality bred lab pup ….or any other pup as my £25 lab pup cost 40 plus years back .
Back then I'd have had a few quid left if I'd bought that pup out of my weekly wage . At £1000 plus it would need at least two weekly wages to buy a pup nowadays ? - - - - Probably 3 weeks of a mans wages ?
I honestly do not believe pups need to cost so much. Even buying a pup from a trial bred litter is no guarantee the pup will be a trial winner …… the person behind the pup and the training and experience he/she can give the pup is the main factor in having an eventual trial winner.....or just another decent gundog.
Personally I have always been able to get whatever I needed from any decently bred pup just by training it and by giving it the right kinds of game experience and it hasn't cost me anything like £1000 to do that !
In my opinion, anyone who pays £1000 for a puppy is at least one sandwich short of a picnic ! You cannot buy success in trials....you have to work for it.

Your last three paragraphs are spot on in my mind. Some people in the spaniel world and iam sure in other circles, always having to buy litters with all red ink, believing they will get a winner. Whilst this may improve your chances certainly not guaranteed!
My bitch is out of ftch to an old keepers dog.... I won with her, put some good training in!
My bw was an off chance buy on fb from Ireland, a big gamble for €400. But he's is superb and I look forward to hopefully competing with him this year. If you look at his pedigree its nearly all black ink!

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
Ah yes the good old days, you could buy a family home in Surrey for less than the price of a good pup these days!
The days of latch key dogs being mated by whatever else roamed the streets and Darwin survival of the fittest ruled, vets, who used them!
Disposable income today is well in excess today than it was then, it’s impossible to drive to work without seeing a car that costs 70-80-100k plus pass you on the road!
Workings mans wage? An average plasterer is £200 a day, if you can get him and his mate is £150 a day, plumbers, let’s not even go there!!
So why should a breeder make more today than they did back then? The costs are higher standards higher risks higher, but of course that goes against our national in bred hatred of anyone making money!!
The world has changed, values and priorities have changed, rightly or wrongly that’s the world we live in and these pups are still less than your daily cup of coffee!

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
Well I was a postman and I can assure you that even nowadays postmen do not make anything like £500 per week so if a postie buys a pup at £1000 it will have cost him about 3 weeks wages. The most expensive car I ever bought cost £2500 and I still never pay more than that for a car. Expensive cars and expensive gundogs were and still are well outside of my bank balance but at least where dogs were concerned I always felt confident I could compete against anyone in this country and sometimes win with my "cheap" puppy.
On a postman's weekly wage I could buy a well bred puppy 35 years ago but not now ….the breeders are getting too greedy in my opinion but are not actually producing better pups to match the fancy prices !

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
I’d have to disagree! Standards of pups, breeding and rearing conditions have improved dramatically.
If I recall it was this forum, possibly one of the contributors to this thread that described pups being born under the shed and the breeder pulling out pups for prospective purchasers. Survival of the fittest! I think this is or hope this is a thing of the past.
We live in a disposable world, everything gets binned and replaced because it’s cheaper to buy new than repair. Maybe people paying strong money for pups will be less inclined to bin them at the first obstacle.
No matter what anyone’s view on price is, it’s still less than a coffee a day.
Some may smoke, some may like a pint in the pub some might like an expensive pup! It’s all about choice but out of those options and know what one I’d choose and what’s the cheapest!

Re: Silver Labrador Pups....... Fair Price!!!
Sadly, I’m not sure that price is any incentive to make pups/dogs less disposable. People pay fantastic prices for mongrels and pedigree dogs and will put them in the shelter or move them on at the drop of a hat. When problems arise or they become inconvenient to their life style or it suddenly dawns on them what a commitment owning a dog is, all they can then think about is getting shut at any cost. How many well bred, ‘expensive’ gundog pups have been moved on because of a squeak or because they supposedly lacked a gear!?
I’ve just paid what I once would have considered an eye watering amount for a pup and have no regrets. She’s already showing great potential. I could probably have got a cheaper pup of the same breed but the breeders health test, trial and regularly import bloodlines from top European kennels so go to considerable expense to produce pups of quality. Will it turn out better than a cheaper pup? I’ll never know but I don’t begrudge paying for the breeder’s conscientiousness, especially in what is essentially still a minority breed.
If you’re a professional trainer/breeder and breeding is part of your business then you have overheads, welfare and tax liabilities that hobby breeders don’t so I do think it unfair when hobby breeders charge the same as the pros. But that isn’t going to change anytime soon, unless the new breeding regulations have an affect on it.
