You have to ask why he buggered off to the states — find that out and the opinions on him as a trainer ( and a man) will probably change.

I met him only once. He made a completely wrong statement over the tannoy at a gamefair. I sought him out and told him he was wrong..... I was probably a bit "heated. " He went back on the tannoy and corrected the statement.

That's to his credit, aye? I mean, what did Deeley do, speak up as surrogate for Madame Moderator with praise that you were hitting the century mark in age, only to change it to "Oigh, let's all sing happy birthday like we're at an 'Merican pointer field trial to Our Wullie as he turns 99!"

Spent a long weekend with Martin at a Spaniel training workshop. I will miss his wit, charm he was resourceful and sincere in his approach with people and dogs.

I have never met the man but I did like his style and manner. His commentary and videos on training demonstrated firmness, reward and praise. Of these, the last two dominated my impressions.

Gundogguy, welcome back, have missed your turning up on this patch - but been following you at the 'Merican "upl*nd" board where training advice - until you got there - was taboo. How 'bout that Pat Berry - happy that he has moved into the competitive arena and been successful with his springers. Also, another Yank who founded the rtf saw an oblique mention I made to Martin Deeley's passing (which I read here in the ancient e-collar thread) and asked for corroboration - nobody in US gundog circles seemed to have heard about it. I was in fact somewhat shocked that so little mention was made, nary an obituary to be found, in his adopted country.
Still have folks on that retriever board who remember Martin fondly for having "coached" the US team in a retriever test-cum-exhibition (dummies only) against the UK and Euro nations about 15 years ago - think he also helped out with the Canadians, too, unless they were part of a "North American" entry and didn't field a team of their own. But I doubt it since, as you may recall, the AKC actually sponsored the US team featuring some of the top pro trainers, including Mike Lardy, in the competition. Anyhow, nice to see you back in your "adopted" spaniel and gundog discussion precincts and have a prosperous 2020, same to all here, too, especially our Wullie as he celebrates his sesquicentenary! (Just joshin', Bill - again!)
