I have a long lifetime of experience with springers, first my fatherโ€™s and then my own. This was all here in Canada where I used them for what you would call rough shooting. In the last ten years I have had two cockers which I trained in exactly the same way I would a springer. My experience is there is no discernible difference in trainability. The toughest dog to train I ever owned was a springer bitch and the easiest was also a springer bitch. The cockers fall nicely in the middle of the spectrum. The only real difference I notice is natural range. My springers were big running wide sweeping dogs who covered a lot of ground in a couple of hours hunting. This suited me perfectly when I was young man with strong legs. I got my cocker after I had turned 60 and his natural range was much closer and he is also much more attentive to my slower pace and sticks close. He also is quite happy to stop and take a break and a rest as soon as he sees me stop. The hard driving springers would do so but only when told to stop and usually under protest๐Ÿ˜‰

Donโ€™t worry about colour! Find a well bred litter with a calm relaxed mother. Close your eyes and reach in and pick one. No matter the colour or the breed they all look beautiful on the way back to you with a strong runner in their mouth ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Along with the "pick a calm mother" I have walked away from litters where the dam was frenetic, I don't need frenetic my life.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

When deciding on a pup, the Llewellin pup I was going to purchase , I choose the dam first. Sound females best suited males. Relied on the owners experience, kennel owner. It takes some time. Mike
