Well you can imagine the comments I get then, everything from "What's that then?" which is fair enough as most people will never have heard of a Barbet let alone seen one, to the more aggressive

them (dogmatically) : "Ooh, it's a Labradoodle!"
me (pleasantly) : "No, she's a Barbet"
them (more dogmatically) : "it looks like a Labradoodle"
me (less pleasantly) : "No, not really, and she's a pedigree dog"
them (argumentatively) : "well, Labradoodles are pedigree"
me (even less pleasantly) : "No, they're not actually"
them (departing and muttering) "It IS a Labradoodle, and they are pedigree anyway"

Aaaargh! The general public ..... I don't know about the "bless 'em" bit

I said it might, as it's easier for the dog to hear- BUT that it ouldn't ork unless she taught the dog what it meant at home. Result? A shaggy terrier ith excellent recall to whistle :-D
That reminds me of an incident a couple of years ago when I lived in York and used to use Hob Moor to train/exercise my dogs. I'd just taken Tau out to do a bit of training, and was about ready to wind it up when I heard someone blowing a whistle, looked around, and there was a young woman, quite well built, whistle in the direction of a terrier, who was stood about 40 yards away looking at her. Terrier didn't budge, woman whistled again, terrier started b*ggering off in the opposite direction, woman stood whistling, and whistling, and whistling, and by then I'd popped Tau on lead, gathered up my gubbins and was walking past her to the exit off the Moor. I thought about suggesting she go get her dog before it b*ggered off completely, but took one look at her face and thought better of it, she looked very focussed.

Two hours later, I took Indie and Tau out for a bit of exercise together, just walking up to the snickleway that led onto the Moor, when I spot said young woman, marching along, covered in mud and looking like she'd been dragged through a hedge backwards, with a very contrite looking terrier on the end of the lead, those magic whistles are great

No by the time we got to that area the queues were long and couldn't be bothered to wait so didn't see who was running them. Saw a couple of people I knew - a lady with her springer who we met at Amerdown Spaniel Day recently and a local gamekeeper but that was it.

"yes I said"

"oh well that will be why it's so obedient then. Its bred into them so they don't need much training. We had one that wasn't from working stock and couldn't walk it anywhere off its lead. Think we will get one that is from working stock next time and hopefully it will be like yours"

Anyone know where you can get these working dogs that don't need any training? Would have saved me an awful lot of time!

Anyone come across any similar daft statements?
Thats exactly why I bought a working springer. I had seen seen a couple of well behaved springers in a pub which my kids adored and thought they would be the best dog to get if you have never owned one before :o And I was right he's taught me loads

I've got a little story that may amuse you Vicky. I had a lady pensioner as a next door neighbour and she bought a Jack Russel puppy. On my advice she took it to the vet to have it checked and it was O.K. The lady asked me in to her house to admire her puppy and as I did so I spotted a flea. I informed the lady of this and she said the vet had given her a spray for this. She asked me where the flea was and I pointed it out. She picked it off the pup between finger and thumb, held it up and went "skooooosh " with the spray canister !  She then proceeded to search for more fleas to skooosh ! :brickwall:

You both have me chuckling!

The food tales ring a bell or two...a young springer came in for vaccinating, she was about 4 but like a barrel on legs. She could ony have minimal lead exercise as she had badly smashed her front legs up as a pup. I asked what they fed, "oh, a working dog food" :brickwall: I put on my happy face to suggest that a 'light' food would be more appropriate given that she could only do light exercise. "We chose it becasue it had a spaneil on so we thought it was good for spaniels" Anyway, they took my advice on board and they then asked if they could see my dog- to have an idea what to aim for so Quincy had to do a little catwalk parade for them.
