Hi Mike,

You may want to try this route: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/36 ... pg_ftr_art
The link gives details of a KC Pilot Scheme for Registration of Dogs of unverified parentage. Probably only worth jumping through the hoops if you really want to do trials or working tests though - or if he is a cracker, you may want to breed from him later and KC Reg pups.

Edited to change female to male -oops!

I did ask for a refund and the only offer they had was that they would take the pup back for a full refund. We didnt want to do this as i already have a strong bond with the dog and his training is going extremely well (so far!). I suppose £430 is alot for a non KC pup but in a way he is worth 10x that to us as he is a cracking dog so we are not too worried overall.

Cheers
Mike
If it makes you feel better, i got into the same situation with Jess my/was German Shepherd but i paid £740 to find out she was not KC, due to Dam having to many litters in that 1 year.

Sorry to hear that and you probably knew no better but I would most definitely not have bought a pup off epupz :cursing: for a start and I hate to say this but you can't even be sure the dogs you saw and the papers matched either.

Whats done is done and as you say Billy is a big part of your family and I wish you well with him. :-D At least you know, next time you want a working dog go to a reliable gundog breeder and if you're not sure ask on here.

I bought Merlin from a litter advertised on Epupz Rascal. The person who bred him is a falconer and it was the first litter that he had bred. He had them advertised on the site because the owner of the stud dog had also had a litter [of 10] born a month before his and as they lived within 50 miles of each other there were not that many people left wanting Brittanys.
Merlin was under a year old when Rory Major saw him first and told me that he wanted to use him on Amber, his Dual Champion bitch, because he liked his attitude :!: . That litter was born last year and some are already winning well in the showring, as is Merlin with 1CC and 2 RCC's. I know that doesn't mean much to a lot of you on here but at least 4 of these pups are also working well as is Merlin when he gets the chance. So not all breeders/sellers on epupz are crooks some, indeed, are very genuine, it's just the minority that give the site a bad name. Remember that some well known breeders can also be a bit on the iffy side and do the dirty on people. For example, I agreed to buy a Vizla pup from a well known breeder in Scotland [many years ago] and having made all the arrangements to go up and collect the pup had a phone call to say she had sold him and not to bother going. This at 10pm the night before I went :brickwall:

Me, Ghillie the Champion, Merlin the Mad. Brittanys were bred as poachers dogs.....They were an extension of the old rogue's arm, trained to look innocent and unprepossessing, all the time plotting, thinking, scheming to make game!

This might be a stupid question, but how do you ever know for sure the 'dogs you saw and the papers matched'
Breeder says 'This is the dam, this is the sire', ok, how do you know for sure?????????

Yup good and bad as in most things in life I suppose and a case of “buyer beware”. Obviously GGD and hanrebor have had a positive experience, I do hear more bad than good about it though especially at the local rescue kennel. Had a quick look tonight through some of the gundog breeds and there is maybe a couple that might make me ring and enquire, most though are cross bred dogs being sold at the same price and many for more than purebreds.

I’m sorry but it still wouldn’t be my first port of call but there ya go maybe its just me that’s missing out.

My litters are usually pre-booked but I do put one ad each year on ePupz, mainly to say if you are looking for a pup there is a vast range to choose from.
Sure if you watch week by week, as I have done sometimes, you can pick out the puppy farmers on ePupz.
But most people want pet dogs and the latest independent study confirms that. KC Reg is an option for particular reasons - it is not a quality standard.

But let me be clear on this, if the pup is advertised as KC Reg and it is not, then it is an issue for Trading Standards and should be taken up there ( Do not be fobbed off with Consumer Direct or equivalent). The problem is the four paws do tend to grab your emotions and Billy's owners have been offered everything that Trading Standards would initially advise (Return pup and ask for full refund- been offered. Also been offered a substitute pup). The only option to get a price equivalent to a non-KC pup is to go thru Small Claims Court. As the law is different in Scotland I cannot give detailed info for England and Wales. But it is a route, and like all recourse to law, very stressing emotionally as well as to the pocket.

I sold my 5 pups on Epuz all but one went to working homes.(2 had homes before i put the add up)
The other went to an active home, i know this because i met the potential buyer and their other dog, which was a healthy Springer, i then searched out the buyer on Facebook to look at photos of what they got up to with their dog ;)

I agree with Sgurr - speak to trading standards as if they were advertised as something they are not breeder can be done under sale of goods act. Should at least offer you the difference between pedigree and non pedigree price. Same goes if they are sold as being healthy or health tested and prove not to be. Especially with a gundog as it would not be 'fit for purpose' that it was bought for if you couldnt work or compete because of one of the above.

I doubt the OP would have much success with trading standards as the breeder has offered a full refund on the return of the pup. Emotional blackmail but the offer has been made.

I dont think we would have a case with trading standards as we have been offered a full refund upon return of the pup. If we would have had him a week then maybe i would have considered it but having had the little fella for 9 weeks the bond is a bit too strong. To be honest its just the principle of it that has got my back up.

Just have to chalk it up as a lesson learned i think, it doesnt mean that i cant eventually do a bit of beating and picking up with him ( i think?).

Cheers
