Re: Daily Feeding
My wee springer is 6 and a half months. She's happily on 2 meals a day. Morning and around 6pm. She will only eat a mouthful or two at lunch time, so I've cut it out This also gives her time to poo when we go out in the evening so it's not in the garage waiting for me to find in the morning
I've also started feeding my 10 year old Weimer twice a day instead of his usual once. He seems to like it. He couldn't understand why Rosie was getting fed and he wasn't, but then Homer will eat any time, any place, any thing....no bin is safe

Re: Daily Feeding
I look at it this way, how many meals would you eat in a day?? little is better often than more at one time its common sence. The people who have a problem I find are folks with one dog as they become fussy and become uninterested in food. I find that abnormal in a dog as all dogs love food, feed the right stuff ie meat or raw and watch your dog go crazy for food. Dry dog food has a lot to answer for, created by humans for convenience not for the benefit of the dogSteve M wrote:Hi had to take my my 12 week old cocker to the vets yesterday and she checked him over and suggested that I take him onto 2 meals a day as his weight is on track for his age any opinions welcome on the 2 meals 3 meals option
My Attitude is based on how you treat me!!
Re: Daily Feeding
I phase out the third meal at around 6 months, little dogs little stomachs, they need small amounts more often.
In life, it is important to know when to stop arguing with people and simply let them be wrong.

Re: Daily Feeding
Yes, that was my point ~ I disagree with the vet!! Unless the dog is overweight and the vet is trying to be polite about it...

Re: Daily Feeding
I dont see the difference to the vet, if you are feeding the daily allowance, and the only thing to decide is how many meals to split it into i do not see how this will affect weight.
I personally would keep 3 meals until around 6 months or they make it clear they dont want one of them and then give the allowance over the others. I like to feed twice a day, and i split their allowance in half, but i know of people that do a 25/75 split between breakfast and the evening meal.
Not sure what difference the 50/50 or 25/75 split makes though, wasnt something i thought about at the time!

Re: Daily Feeding
If the dog were overweight the vet might think it a good idea to feed the same amount you would put into the bowl but twice rather than three times a day?
I think people feed 25 / 75 because its better for the dog if its out working to have less rolling around inside? I feed mine once a day because one is car sick and would give me back her brekkie on the way to the shoot. Having said I feed once, the Spaniels often eat half of it at 6 ish and the other half at bedtime so I suppose they have put themselves onto two a day!

Re: Daily Feeding
That makes sense, we are fortunate that neither of ours are car sick and their afternoon routine is similar to morning, so 50/50 just keeps it going around about every 12 hours.Judy wrote:If the dog were overweight the vet might think it a good idea to feed the same amount you would put into the bowl but twice rather than three times a day?
