Maybe They have the security of the pack ?

I imagine some phd scientist that is on a government grant ,spending two hours a day and getting loads a dosh for doing nothing for the rest of the week , has probably done a study?, and come up with some hair brained psycological connection that 'Milly the lab', doesn't like Oscar the Terrier'?
....and no doubt we are gonna get the 'all important', internet link !...to prove all this! , then we will definately be convinced.
Or!! maybe it's true?
Aah, but how do you KNOW that they don't get startled when confronted by SECs??Polmaise wrote:Why do a pack of fox hounds who would normally only see fox hounds ,not get startled when they see other dogs or people while out with the "whips"?

I won't give you an internet link, even though you are clearly seeking one, but I will refer you to Temple Grandin. In her book, 'Animals in Translation', she speaks of dogs 'hyper-generalizing'. Now, we all know that dogs don't generalize well, so a dog needs to meet lots of other dogs, not just their litter mates, or house mates in order to generalize the notion that dogs, in general are not threatening. Perhaps you've read the book and just forgot about that part

However, Grandin speaks of a dog having a traumatic experience with a red balloon floating across a lawn (it just scared him cause he's never seen a red balloon floating across a lawn) and generalizing to any round, red objects of any size and shape, under any circumstances including red, hot air balloons in the sky, and large red 'Red Ball' logo on the back of a gasoline tanker truck . So, it seems a reasonable hypothesis (sorry for the scientific term) that a young dog, having had a bad experience with ANY brown dog, could generalize the notion that ALL brown dogs are threatening...hmmm???
Although, I do have to say that much of what we knew for certain about dogs has been turned on it's head relatively recently![]()
