One of the major problems faced by the police in tackling crime is the fact that so many criminals re-offend shortly after they are let out of prison. This fact is exacerbated by the derisory sentences often passed by the courts. Firstly, criminals do not reoffend whilst they are still in prison, and secondly if they only receive a light sentence it is often regarded as a license to continue “business as usual”.
A typical example is the case of the serial offender, known to the police, who fired a catapult through the door of a kennel at the face of a captive dog at point-blank range in Goring on 17 September. He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £100 compensation. Surely a seasoned criminal would regard such a penalty as no more than a slap on the wrist?
However the police have no power to increase sentencing. They need our help. If enough of us write to our MPs and to the Police and Crime Commissioner, “people power” may prevail. We urge you to act as soon as possible. The email address of the PCC, Anthony Stansfeld, is: pcc@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk and you can find the address of your MP through Google. Letters should be sent to:-
