If it's a spaniel we are talking about, I aim to complete all of the above in six weeks providing the dog has no serious quirks to overcome. That's what I'd call basic training. The next six weeks would be blind retrieves and handling, steadiness to game, advanced retrieving over obstacles, water, picking game, ready to shoot over. The hard bit is introducing shooting over a dog. It has to be seamless and done properly. At this point you generally need to iron out a few quirks as the pressure builds. The game shooting can take varying amounts of time to do correctly and depending on the dogs finished requirement.CMO wrote:Hi
My thoughts on basic training are:
- walk to heel
- stop on whistle
- drop to shot
- retrieving to hand
-hunting close with shooting range
-quartering .
- possibly taking direction on hand signals.
I hope this makes the question a little bit clearer.
Thanks for the replies .
Of course, all this depends on a dogs natural ability.
