got mine through a friend who does security work, about 140 i think it was supposed to be dont quote me as it was done in a 'deal' lol

Don't believe that a guard dog will be of great use, I have known some pretty nasty ones traded indeed my own uncle collected and sold one without it even getting chance to bite. Besides they are a liability to own, to your gundogs, guests and even family when aggressive or human aggressive.

I'm also aware of a number of "guard" dogs being attacked by would be burglars who seriously injure the guard dog before going back for the gundogs once they know the guard dog to be out of the picture. Disgusting people out there!

Hello,,i am new to this site and am finding it fascinating , and educational for a novice

I am at present looking for my first working dog ,,my others being pets
I used to breed and show pedigree goats,,,don,t laugh yet,,,
And all my kids were ear marked ,,tattooed,, at 7days old
Its there for life,,,unremovable,,short of chopping an ear off !!
And costs just a few pounds
It could be done elsewhere than the ear
There are guys who come to the house to do this,,altho i,m out of the loop at the moment
So can,t tell you who is doing this at the moment

It never occurred to me NOT to do this with my new dog
And i,m surprised to learn folks don,t do this as a standard practise
Its a great idea,,not only for identifying stolen dogs
But also to prove the dam and sire are who they claim to be when viewing a litter

I also microchip, which is useful if lost dog is found,,like by police or the vets but
these can be removed by a thief

Just food for thought,,,,,,,

On a lighter note, no-one's ever tried to steal my chocolate Labradors!

You would not say that down south chocolate labs are the in thing as pets, there are five in my small village all from different breeders.

They're popular all over, not just in the South, and have been puppy farmed to death, one of the reasons they have their *nutty* reputation. Joking aside, they would probably be a prime target, if anyone thought there was any money to be made from churning out a few litters. Only one of them is entire mind you, but potential thieves wouldn't know that.

Unfortunately, fox reds seem to be the next fashion victim, I've seen a lot of *pet* buyers asking about this shade of yellow, anything deemed rarer or slightly more unusual seems to be a target. I'm surprised no-one's bred a tea-cup Labrador yet, although I have seen miniature Labradors advertised in the past.

Lights are a very good deterrant, especially if they illuminate a large, angry alsatian bouncing about loose in front of the kennel doors!

If you arent threre though there is very little you can do! Bad state of affairs especially because up here there are plenty of dodgy characters beating etc on shoots that know exactly where the good dogs are!

As already mentioned though if you arent there then they can just shoot the guard dog (or even more embarassing, steal it as well!)
