I have been present when a lab did it's working dog certificate. It was embarrassing for me to watch but the dogs owner was highly chuffed because the dog got the certificate. At lunchtime on the day of a trial the judges asked the dogs owner to sit the dog until a bang was fired off and a bird shot during the morning was thrown a very short distance away on short grass. This was done and the dog was sent off to retrieve. It wombled out picked the bird and wombled it's way back again.

One A panel judge told me later that was about par for the course. I felt it made the certificate worthless and said so. He replied that it didn't matter for no field trialer would ever use the dog at stud or buy one of his puppies .

I do think some working spaniels would do better with more coat (though not as 'furnished' as a show dog). My big hairy Quincy never feels the cold, ploughs through nettles etc etc, his lighter coated son does get cold and avoids stingers unles there is a really good prize. For duck flighting he has to wear a neoprene coat, somehing I'd never dream of putting on Quincy....
